You have to burrow pretty deep into Nirvana demos and outtakes to find anything that's actually shire.

Incesticide is amazing. Always wrote this off as a gosser but it's savage. I see a few comments about Hellhammer/CF which make sense.

Was on a big In Utero buzz the past weekend funnily enough. As for CF, I have a very distinct memory of a Nevermind era one page interview in Kerrang back in the day where they mentioned having a tape in their van that had Smithereens in one side and Frost on the other.

Ya, I've seen or read an interview saying the same. Thought it was The Vaselines but Smithereens also rings a bell. Never seemed as evident as some parts of that demo though.

Ved Buens Ende...- Those Who Caress the Pale.
Penance- The Road Less Travelled.

Going back a few years but it's a magnificent album.

R.E.M.: Document - mighty stuff.

Picked up Document not too long ago in a charity shop and it's far better than I thought it'd be, having never been a fan of any of it

Grand I'll get into this now I haven't listened to fecal matter in ages. I see the Nevermind smart sessions in the suggestions underneath, which are also great and arguably better than some of the final versions. I feel a strong Nirvana buzz coming on

I was a late convert to R.E.M. but they have some seriously great material. That's maybe the earliest I'd go to regularly as the first few albums were a bit whiny and jangly for my taste, but there's a few decent tracks spread across them.

Re: Fear Of A Blank Planet - the lyrics are a bit wince-inspiring alright but I think that was the point, it was a concept album from the point of view of a messed-up teen, wasn't it?

Great album either way, some great playing on it.

Oh right I didn't think of that, I just thought Wilson was trying to appeal to a younger audience with the lyrics but probably should've copped it given none of the other albums have lyrics like that. Haven't had it on in a good while and actually can't think of much of it off the top of my head.

I picked up Murmur by REM lately enough as well but wasn't mad on any of it. And Green, got that as well and liked it. Sometimes their stuff is a bit toe curling but when it's good it's very good. All cheap as shit on Amazon too I keep meaning to grab another couple

There's the smart sessions I was on about. The snare sound is unreal on them and I prefer some of the tunes to the album

Still on the Nirvana buzz. My paretns went on holiday in about 92/93 and were getting me a walkman as a present. I asked for a Nirvana album to go with it by recommendation of my brother, I think, who wouldn't really have had a clue and my parents came home with Murmur. Thought it was shit. Still think it shit.

Just giving those Nevermind sessions a lash.
