I've only heard Hosannas once, it did nothing for me then but that was when it came out. Must give it another go.

I gave Pentagram a spin after reading that too. Didn't initially care for the vocals but I was sold by the second song.

It's sort of typical for them if there is such a thing so I get what you mean but with the passing of time it's actually a decent album in its own right

One of the best albums ever there for me while I was going for a spin: Akercocke - Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone.

As I said, one of the best albums ever and yet nobody on here seems to know it at all. Just fucking class from start to finish, such variety, such texture, such fucking ripping heaviness.

I think they did themselves no favours with the whole image thing but fuck me what an album. Just gets better with time the longer it goes with nothing of the same ilk coming out at all.

Smashing mix, smashing timbre off the whole thing, progressive but focused, blasting but textured, complex but bludgeoning at the same time.

Really can't say enough good things about those wonderful young men for that one album. It's like an odd marriage of Deicide and Killing Joke with some faster blasting fucked in and a dash of I dunno.

Really don't get why it doesn't get more praise after nearly 2 decades of being so good and such a unique proposition of an album.

And the tunes are catchy, with a certain pop sensibility on top of it all, which isn't exactly to the forefront of most things labelled as Progressive DM, which I guess it is at the end of the day.

Anyone here like 90s DM in general who hasn't heard it? You should.

Pentagram is amazing alright. Maaneskyggens Slave is one of my favourite songs of all time.

Never liked Akercocke, bar one song I heard on a covermount CD (Son Of The Morning, I think it was called). Nothing to do with the image, just thought they didn't know what they were themselves, whether they were a death metal or black metal band etc.

Blackened Death maybe but that's not on the one I'm on about. It's real real fuckin class so it is. If you haven't, definitely give it a go

Edit: I would go as far as to say every song on Words.. is better than that one you're on about

Nocturnus- The Key
Ugh!!! What an album!?!

I had a listen a bit of the first Achercoke album last night, the black and white cover.
I've always been aware of them and I remember one video being on headbangers ball or super rock. They were in suits.

Regardless the bits I heard last night sound like every is turned up to full intensity wise. I'll have to listen probably.

Are half that band in Voices and Werewolves?

Yeah absolutely lethal, definitely their best album too though Choronzon is lethal and one of their best tracks is on Antichrist (Footsteps resound...)

Agree with basically everything in your post about it.  Just ridiculously good and severely overlooked.  The lads' shtick and their auld Kerrang favourability ultimately didn't do them much good in the long run - anyone I have asked about them in person too has just laughed and said "the lads in the suits? shocking stuff" until I pushed enough most admitted they never even listened to them.  Dire.

Anyway I'm putting on "Words..." Today too, it's unreal.

I wouldn't even start there just go straight for "Words..." And work backwards from there.  Also yeah the lads are in Voices too, also Damim has one of them, I never heard of Werewolves though.

One of my favorites to revisit every so often, especially the track Andromeda Strain.

Steelwing - Zone of Alienation
Grima - Red Forest Ritual (EP)
Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race (back on these lads after listening to the new offering from Spectral Voice over the weekend)

The Evil - Seven Acts To Apocalypse

Wagner from Sarcófago is the guitarist in this stoner doom band. What makes them stand out is the fantastic vocals from Mistres Wournous which go from alt-rock to operatic wails, kind of reminds me of Miranda Sex Garden.

Werewolves are based on Australia, 4 albums with a 5th on the way. It's pure gym chug chug death metal. Like one wave of blasting. They are also the main fellas in The Antichrist Imperium. From what I've heard of them they are like a successor to the more out there Achercoke stuff.

I remember that video of them in the suits but I think the only Akercocke album I have listen to Choronzon, wasn't that fussed on it at the time.

They also appeared on some late night debate show on BBC when the thumpers were trying to get their show in Belfast cancelled.

Testament - Low
Megaton Sword - Might & Power
Midnight Force - Dunsinane
Iotunn - Access All Worlds
Enslaved - Utgard
