Still on the jazz kick. Been Charlie Parker this week. The albums Bird and Diz, and Jazz at Massey Hall. Both absolutely phenomenal. Bird and Diz is those two plus Thelonious Monk and Buddy Rich, which has got to be one of the most insane lineups ever. Jazz at Massey Hall was Bird, Dizzy, and Charles Mingus with Bud Powell and Max Roach, which is also an absurd lineup.

Also gave the Giant Steps album a proper go based on a recommendation on this thread and it was wild too. Coltrane and Parker are genius level saxophone players, prob the two best to ever do it. Like comparing Mozart and Beethoven.

Quote from: open face surgery on July 15, 2025, 11:38:18 AMGreat to see a bit of love for the jazz. Giant Steps is a perfect album, no question. Haven't given On The Corner a whole lot of time, threw it on last week as it happens but switched to BB. So many amazing Miles albums. On the hip hop front, Jeru tha Damaja sampled Will o' the Wisp off Sketches of Spain. There's countless others, I'm sure.

Just about to fire on Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil". I don't know as much jazz as metal/rock, but I feel that's down to how dense it is. There's a lot of eating in a decent record.

Sligo Jazz Festival is on next week, and should be great. It's their 20th anniversary and are going all out for it. They've had some big names here over the years - Chuck Rainey, Paul Wertico, Virgil Donati, Michael Manring, amongst many others. There's always such a buzz around the place, and it's amazing to walk in most places and find a performance.

Sounds amazing! The Edmonton Jazz Fest just happened a few weeks ago. Mike Stern being the biggest name. I was rushing to the show, which was in a hotel I'd never been to before. So I do the hasty park and run into the lobby (coming straight from work so a bit late) and I see a guy sitting there and I'm like,

"Hey, are you going to the Mike Stern show?"
"Uh, yeah"
"Do you know where it is?"
*points*

And I sprint off down the hall, find the venue and get a seat. Guy from the lobby walks in about a minute after with his guitar on his back and gets onstage. It was Mike fucking Stern.

Haha, whoops. At least you could say you're just there for the music

One of my greatest gig-going (or not going, as was the case) regrets was actually Mike Stern playing with Victor Wooten at Sligo Jazz, about 11 or 12 years ago. Two absolute legends playing a ten minute walk from me gaff. I was at a wedding instead. Gah!

Seeing him play with Victor Wooten would have been wild! I was pleasantly surprised at the Edmonton show as he had Dennis Chambers on drums, so it was def two legends playing there!

One of my greatest gig going lineup surprises was seeing Suicidal Tendencies in France about 15yrs ago and they had Dennis Chambers on drums and Thundercat (going by Stephen Bruner then) on bass. Absolutely ridiculous lineup! One of the best gigs I ever saw, they had the place absolutely bouncing!

That Wooten gig must've been wild for sure!

And Chambers with ST? What the hell! My mind is still blown that Vinnie Coliauta did session work for Megadeth (and his brief was clearly "do Nick Menza"). ST have had some selection of fellas behind the kit for sure.

First heard Thundercat on Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp A Butterfly" and was initially struck by how much like Bootsy Collins he sounded. Then his solo stuff, then mind blown he was in ST (with his brother on drums, no less!).

Fugazi: Repeater + 3 Songs

Utterly perfect in every way. One of the best recorded albums I've ever heard. That bass drum sound is glorious.

Listened to almost every Brass Against video on youtube yesterday evening/night. Absolutely class. Yes, the band whose singer pissed on someone on stage. But what a singer!

I thought they were decent when they supported Tool a few years ago

Big Thief - U.F.O.F.

I'm not a fan of indie folk, but this album has moments of eeriness and songs about aliens that keep it from becoming cloying.

I have to confess I'm a sucker for a brass band covering modern tunes

Next album on the Miles Davis kick: In a Silent Way. Also awesome. Zero duds so far in his fusion period.

Can't abide jazz in general but for some reason, Davis' Get Up With It I enjoyed. Particularly the first track.

Perfect. Didn't like it initially because it was drifting into the fusion but warmed to that and it's incredible. Check out Miles in the Sky if you haven't. Earlier but way more fusion and savage as well. Paraphernalia worth the entrance fee alone.

Class  8)

I suppose this should go here:

https://umlautbarmckinnon.bandcamp.com/album/desol

Umlaut - "Desolë"

Ex Mr-Bungle lads.  Just totally lethal, have listened to nearly nothing else since the start of the week.  Poppy, proggy, savage musicianship, just ticks all the boxes, couldn't recommend it enough.

I have also been listening to this lately but it is the fuckin polar opposite:
https://berylliumproject.bandcamp.com/album/morana-desperation

Compilation of hard industrial techno.  Blistering.  Does exactly one thing but the one thing is lethal.

On CD

Taste - Montreaaux
Rory Gallagher - Live in 77 boxset
Crusty Hoor - Unfinished Revolution

Yes.

You're making me book a flight

I was listening to Rick Beato interview Andy Wallace this morning. They were talking about Jeff Buckley, and I realised that as much as Grace is ingrained in my mind, I've never heard a note of My Lover the Drunk, or whatever it's called. They played a part of a song from it which made me realise I should probably give it a go.
