Buckcherry - S/T,  been years since I threw on the CD, better than I remembered, good few 'ballads' on this one

Quote from: Mooncat on July 17, 2025, 08:10:58 PMSounds like the song that would be playing in a dark 90s thriller when the protagonist cop is following up a lead to some underground club with dank brickwork and neon and lots of alternative types grinding on the dancefloor.

First thing I said to the brothers when I sent it to was

"Where's my leather pants"

Haven't given On The Corner a whole lot of time, threw it on last week as it happens but switched to BB. So many amazing Miles albums. On the hip hop front, Jeru tha Damaja sampled Will o' the Wisp off Sketches of Spain. There's countless others, I'm sure.

Just about to fire on Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil". I don't know as much jazz as metal/rock, but I feel that's down to how dense it is. There's a lot of eating in a decent record.

Sligo Jazz Festival is on next week, and should be great. It's their 20th anniversary and are going all out for it. They've had some big names here over the years - Chuck Rainey, Paul Wertico, Virgil Donati, Michael Manring, amongst many others. There's always such a buzz around the place, and it's amazing to walk in most places and find a performance.

Got high with herself and threw on Live in Pompeii. That part could be simple pleasures, but wanted more to talk about how absolutely metal the Careful With That Axe Eugene performance is. Wouldn't mind hearing someone like Oranssi Pazuzu do a cover of it. Anyone know of anything..?

Speak No Evil is a belter as well. Haven't listened to it in years. Always associate it with Joshua Redman - Elastic as I was given both at the same time. Another great album. The tune Jazz Crimes is amazing.

I don't know about covers but live at Pompeii is just a special sort of brilliant altogether

Getting great mileage out of Boys Noize last album. Obviously only tried it out due to the NIN connection but it's really quite good and not the sort of thing I'd usually find myself at but yeah it's a grower

Husker Du : Candy Apple Grey

Not my favourite of theirs but on this album the track 'Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely' is amazing.

Sounds amazing! The Edmonton Jazz Fest just happened a few weeks ago. Mike Stern being the biggest name. I was rushing to the show, which was in a hotel I'd never been to before. So I do the hasty park and run into the lobby (coming straight from work so a bit late) and I see a guy sitting there and I'm like,

"Hey, are you going to the Mike Stern show?"
"Uh, yeah"
"Do you know where it is?"
*points*

And I sprint off down the hall, find the venue and get a seat. Guy from the lobby walks in about a minute after with his guitar on his back and gets onstage. It was Mike fucking Stern.

As much as I love the sound of Zen Arcade and New Day Rising, Candy Apple Grey always makes me wonder what those two albums would have sounded like with better production.

Miles Davis - Dark Magus

A similar enough vibe to On The Corner to keep that high going. Really enjoying his 70s period in general. There's also some crazy mega expanded edition of On The Corner that's like 6hrs long. It's also great!

Dark Magus is a wild album.

Haha, whoops. At least you could say you're just there for the music

One of my greatest gig-going (or not going, as was the case) regrets was actually Mike Stern playing with Victor Wooten at Sligo Jazz, about 11 or 12 years ago. Two absolute legends playing a ten minute walk from me gaff. I was at a wedding instead. Gah!

Been lucky enough to see Stern a few times too. Incredible shows. Amazing to think that he has to use glue to stick his guitar pick to his hand as he has nerve damage in his right hand from a fall.

Seeing him play with Victor Wooten would have been wild! I was pleasantly surprised at the Edmonton show as he had Dennis Chambers on drums, so it was def two legends playing there!

One of my greatest gig going lineup surprises was seeing Suicidal Tendencies in France about 15yrs ago and they had Dennis Chambers on drums and Thundercat (going by Stephen Bruner then) on bass. Absolutely ridiculous lineup! One of the best gigs I ever saw, they had the place absolutely bouncing!
