Sitting in the back garden, watching the sun go down with an icy Lomza, with one of my favourite albums ever on the go, namely John Coltrane's "Giant Steps".

Sometimes life is just pure sound, yanno.

Came across a Yootoob playlist I put together a few years back, some serious tunes on it, most of which I'd forgotten about. Enjoyable seeing where the recommendations led me, not a bad song there so far. Would I have followed the same path nowadays? Probably not.

Edit: this is it sure:

Only thing that goes even better with that is a joint  :abbath:

Future Islands- People Who Aren't There Any More. I did the dog on this one for months when it came out and have avoided it for quite a while. Nice to return to it with fresh ears again. A total beaut.

Miles Davis - On the Corner

Absolutely loved it. For the first bit I wasn't sure if I liked it, but once it got going I was fully absorbed. Ended up listening to it three times in a row. A bit like Bitches Brew crossed with some blaxploitation funk, though the funk doesn't really get going until the second track. You can hear how it influenced hiphop so much. I can even catch where Dr Dre cribbed that west coast sound at one point as well. I'll def be listening to this one a lot more over the next while.

Great to see a bit of love for the jazz. Giant Steps is a perfect album, no question. Haven't given On The Corner a whole lot of time, threw it on last week as it happens but switched to BB. So many amazing Miles albums. On the hip hop front, Jeru tha Damaja sampled Will o' the Wisp off Sketches of Spain. There's countless others, I'm sure.

Speaking of hiphop cribbing off old classics, was listening to Labi Siffre's Remember My Song album yesterday. Such an absolutely stunning vocal take on the track Eminem sampled:

I would say that Check Your Head is the weakest of those albums, not bad by any means it seems to lose momentum towards side 2 (which has a few filler tracks). Saw them when they came to Dublin in 95, at the RDS of all places, long set stuffed with all the classics.

They were definitely still figuring things out and evolving by CYH, does weigh a little bit more on filler at times, once they finessed the balance on Ill it was fucking savage.

Great doc, love their music particularly the s/t

Big Beasties fan, Paul's Boutique is up there with my all time favourites. The Mix Up is a pretty cool instrumental album.
