I certainly got put off them and turned on to them in one fell swoop by, respectively, how they looked in their picture in an old Metal Hammer, and how they sounded on the cover CD.

I'll never get this. Does a metal band have to have the same band t'shirt jean combination to qualify for entry to your ears??  Or is it "not tonight mate" if they're well dressed?

all artforms are about the peripheral things as well as the main thing, music maybe exceptionally so. Im not knocking the having a cultivated aesthetic thing, as it suited the very english satanism thing they were about in those days, but it just didn't seem to match the music somehow, and tbh the music was so far above average it didn't need anything added on top of it, in the way COF benefit from being an overall kind of experience, visual, musical, philosophical etc

That's outrageous! Did they pay to have it fixed?

Some people get turned on by gimmickery, some the opposite.

For me, I got turned off them when I saw them live, despite strong recommendations from people whose music tastes I respect. I had neither heard nor seen them prior to that experience.
I saw Astfgyl attempt a stage dive at the (not packed) Akercocke gig about 12-13 years back in the Voodoo Lounge, it was unreal, the band basically hushed him down off the stage and he sort of flopped slowly onto his feet supported by about two other lads lol

The gig itself was great though.

2005 was a fun year- putting it out there the best year for metal gigs in this country

It wasn't just how they were dressed, it was the whole weird messed up aesthetic of the photoshoot  which, I suppose, was supposed to reflect the eclectic music, but didn't work out visually the way it did in the music. As I said, I got over it, don't worry  ;)

Lol they weren't a bit happy with me at all! On the plus side, some sound fella came up to me a few minutes later and gave me back my phone and wallet, which I didn't know I'd lost during my Eddie Vedder-esque flight. Sound chap whoever he was.

Its age, or your age? This is very important...
