Dark Tranquility - Skydancer/Yesterworlds/The Gallery

Rewatching the ATG documentary and seeing Stanne interviewed sent me down the rabbit hole.The demo/ep and Skydancer are up there with At The Gates, the early Darkthrone and "North From Here" for me in terms of stuff that had a huge impact on me back in the day but I rarely listen to them nowadays. Still absolutely fantastic stuff.

Haven't ever bothered with anything past the Gallery, is there a cut off point I should proceed to before they become absolute garbage?

Check The Mind's I, their third album.  It is more a continuation of the sound on the first two albums.  The album after that, Projector, is when the big change of sound came in.  I don't think it is what you would be looking for.
