Dreaming Neon Black and Dead Heart in a Dead World are my two favourites of theirs.  Definitely worth checking them both out.

[fanboy]All of them. Which isn't very helpful

You can kinda split their discog in two - the first three albums and EP, then the latter four. The production on the latter four is a bit more sterile and clinical (think Andy Sneap did all of those, but open to correction). This Godless Endeavour is the third of these four.

Dead Heart in a Dead World is probably closest to Godless Endeavour in terms of pure guitar shred, but they they just so happen to have been blessed with possibly the best vocalist and guitarist in metal, so while ghe guitar playing is frequently wild, its always tasteful, and the vocal hooks memorable.

The Politics of Ecstasy is my favourite out of the first three, along with the In Memory EP (Matricide is one of their best songs, and the Bauhaus covers are killer). Dreaming Neon Black is the album of their's I had most trouble getting into, but it's still a 9/10 listen.

Enemies of Reality is their shortest album and has a bit of filler (Noumenon), and if you're going for that the remix+remaster is the one to get, as the original release is very flat and muffled. Probably their outright most aggressive album, and I Voyager has some of their heaviest riffing.

The last album The Obsidian Conspiracy has by some margin the least amount of shred on it (the title track has most of the album's shred and I remember being kinda salty when I got the album as that's the track Century Media were using to promote it, but it turns out to be atypical of the rest of the album).

The debut has their best vocal line on the song CBF - "another life is wasted, another death is tasted". It's heavy as fuck while being clean as fuck, and is more powerful than most power metal bands.

My personal favourites are Dead Heart in a Dead World, The Politics of Ecstasy, and the In Memory EP (I'll put that in place of This Godless Endeavour as you know it already).

They're all worthwhile though, there's barely a track I'd skip in their discography[/fanboy]

There are unlisted intro and outro tracks on some copies of the EP, maybe that's what's messing it up? There are also two recorded versions of the album, different pressings have different versions and I think the tracklists don't always correspond to the actual content.

Quote from: Anvil on September 20, 2024, 08:43:28 AMI've always really liked the title track on Dance of Death.  But don't worry, there is some Maiden I don't like (see below).

Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark (that run of songs after Wasted Love to the title track is just dire - the rest is killer).

Actually had FotD on myself this morning.

I don't mind Chains of Misery in that run, but what on earth were they thinking with the gang vocals? Makes them sound like a pound shop AC/DC.

I do like that Bruce used the bit of a rasp in his voice on this one though. Gives the good songs a unique place in their discography for me (with the disclaimer that No Prayer is probably my least played Maiden album ever).

NP...

Sanctuary - Into The Mirror Black, Refuge Denied.

Man, Dane really was the best vocalist in metal. RIP.

The one song I kinda like from that run is Judas Be My Guide.  The chorus is sort of catchy though I can't stand the rest of the song.

Cheers for the recommendations, plenty there to work through.

Dead heart in a dead world was my introduction to Nevermore, amazing album, love Enemies of reality too!

Dead Heart in a Dead World, Enemies of Reality and This Godless Endeavour are their peak, I would say, but cool band and their entire output is worth at least one listen.

Artillery - By Inheritance 9.5/10
The Danes third album was a masterclass in high speed, progressive Thrash. Crazy then that they blotted their copybook by including a ridiculously out of context Nazareth cover. Surely most Thrash heads on here will know this album but if you don't and you're into Forbidden, Sanctuary, Toxik maybe a bit of Anacrusis...give this a shot.

Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter 9/10
If there's one album that really benefits from getting the top volume treatment in an empty house it's this one. Imperious.

Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption 8.5/10
Napalm went full on Death Metal for this one and no surprises that it quickly became a favourite for me. Still trying to fathom some meaning out of the cover art all these years later.

Red Harvest - A Greater Darkness 7/10
Though still listed as active on Metal Archives it's been nigh on 18 years since this last trip into the Norwegian maverick's industrialised, post apocalyptic dystopia. The first track here, Antidote, is an absolute monster casting a long shadow over the rest of the album which, in truth, does get quite wearing towards the end. 'Warthemes'  would have been a natural place to wrap it up.

Witchery - Dead, Hot and Ready 7/10
Second album from these Swedish villains picked up where they left off on the debut ,delivering another collection of pacy, infectious, neck snappers.

Raintime - Tales From Sadness 6/10
Another album where the opening track is the pick of the bunch, this was a promo I was given way back of the Italian band's debut and it is keyboard saturated 'power' Metal that while well played is probably six spoons of sugar too many in the tea for most on here.

...at least once a month  :abbath:

Listened to a load of tech DM today after a mate recommended I listen to The Faceless:

The Faceless - Planetary Duality

which made me want to listen to

Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis

then he recommended

Spawn of Possession - Incurso

I have now had my fill of highly processed tech DM for the next while so may as well crank out some Nevermore!

I'd recommend Spawn of Possession's Cabinet. Their strongest album by far.

By far, you say. Cool, will make a note of it, cheers!

Draped over the trench, a bloated and sickening corpse
Staring down from above with its leering vacant eyes
Its mouth slightly ajar, perhaps in a mocking smirk
Its skin seems alive with a hundred flies

For a while the war is forgotten
As I ponder this ghastly sight
Am I accustomed to this horror?
Should it still cause me to fright?

The Evil That Men Do is fantastic, if there's one dud on that album it's Can I Play With Madness. Catchy yes, but a very silly song. The Wasted Years of that album.

Lol yes, of course you're right.

The Evil that Men Do is a banger, yeah. Incredible brain fart on my behalf! It's Only the Good Die Young that wrecks my head.

Can I Play With Madness - very daft. I love it though. And the video with the cranky arsehole teacher and everything. Deadly.

What! Only the good die young is my favourite iron maiden song! 🤯

I would like to obj both up separately on vinyl and Obsessed came in to my local record store this week... $220! Fuck that. I'll keep an eye out for repressed.

Fuck that from a height, obviously.

Gorgoroth: Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam

Their finest hour for me, the best Gaahl has sounded IMO.
