Graven Deep from the Halcyon EP is one of the best doom tunes to ever make it to me hifi  :abbath:

SOLSTICE - New Dark Age (1998)

Yeah, still not really doing it for me. Some nice melodic lead work to be fair, and a decent sounding album overall, and I can see what they are going for, but there are only certain riffs that really grab me, like towards the end of 'Cimmerian Codex'. It all starts to fade into one track.

The vocals are definitely the biggest issue, they are just completely underwhelming to my ears, not only do they lack power and emotional impact, there is nothing quirky or interesting there, and there is no lilting quality to really lift things melodically, it's like some watery indie singer or something. Fuck all in the way of personality.

Sorry chaps. I'll give it another few spins and check out some of the other stuff, but I don't expect I'll be won over. The idea of the band is still more appealing than the reality.

N.P. SPIRITUS MORTIS - The God Behind The God

Now this is what I'm talking about. Truly epic DOOM with the occasional touch of trad metal. Packed with atmosphere and a sense of dark menace.

It's a shame aul Albert Witchfinder only did the two full lengths. Now that is a doom metal vocalist. He may lack the power of a Messiah or Robert Lowe, but his voice and delivery are packed with personality.

I see he is gone from Friends Of Hell now too. Although Hellbutcher doesn't do a bad job on the new one to be fair.

Pseudogod - Deathwomb Catechesis

Negative Plane - The Pact

Would agree 100% with those two reviews.  I bought 'New Dark Age' when it came out couldn't stick yer man's English accented lisping vocals.  Is he the Fontaine's DC of Doom metal? Gave up after a few years, Sold the CD on eBay

Sigh- Imaginary Sonicscapes.

JOY DIVISION - Heart and Soul (Disc One: Unknown Pleasures Plus)

Master - Saints Dispelled
Nocturnus AD - Unicursal (aside from the vocals on a couple of tracks, I actually think this is pretty decent).
Judas Priest - Stained Glass

Ulcerate - Cutting the Throat of God. Nothing jumping out so far, but not bad. Currently filing under "more Ulcerate".

Canvas Solaris - Irradiance, Sublimation.

Yeah, I've been the same with the new Ulcerate, it feels like an album that should be offering much more, it looks and feels a big one for the band but I can't escape the feeling I've heard an album like this many times before, like its almost by the numbers .And I keep going back to it! Must be that lush red cover.
Wearing jeans and leather, not crackerjack clothes

I've heard one track and I want to like it but it sounds like everything all at once and I'm not pushed about the production.
Apparently the last release is savage but I didn't listen to that one at all.

Solstice - Death Crown Is Victory ( Fucking Love This EP )  :abbath:

Extreme Noise Terror - Holocaust In Your Head

Sadistic Intent - Ressurection Of The Ancient Black Flame

Spear of Longinus - the yoga of national socialism
Nordvrede - monument Viktoria
Kaevum- natur
Nocturnus  -threshold s
Bethlehem - suizid

My Dying Bride: The Angel And The Dark River

I don't care what MDB era you're into, this is their finest hour. If you disagree, please content yourself in the knowledge that YOU ARE WRONG.

Savage album indeed. Depending on my mood this or TLTS are my favorite. Trinity is up there too.
