I can vaguely remember going to see Once in the cinema with an ex years ago, had no idea about the age gap thing or just didn't really pick up on it. The rumour mill is really beginning to gain traction now...predictably enough there's a lot of pushback and folk taking umbrage at the suggestion that a 'national treasure' was anything but.

I would have been inclined to dismiss much of it as rumour but there's no denying that the stuff he openly admitted to regarding their relationship is ropey as fuck.

And a fairly cursory glance online will show that this stuff hasn't just come to light, such as this boards thread from 6 years ago.

There's a lot of pretending from people that this hasn't been talked about all the time in the near 20 years since Once came out. Not to say it was national news, but at a minimum, it has always raised an eyebrow/had him condemned as a wrongun, and Googling that has always returned more scandal. His Wikipedia page talks about their age discrepancy like.

Fans of his have always chosen to turn a blind eye to it, I've always felt.

I have seen Once, own the soundtrack and most Frames/Swell Season/solo Hansard albums, I'm a longtime fan. I'm a regular drinking buddy of someone who was in 'the scene' back in their heyday, would have been a promoter then and he's never mentioned it. I'm not denying it, simply saying it's all new information to me.

Once is abusive in itself tbh. The dose at a session with the acoustic who won't stop banging out and bawling the same repetitive three chord maudlin shite over and over... but in the form of a film. Once and only once. Once too many. This is what's been surprising to me about him down the years, and now again he's died: usually the artists "protected" from their various sins have a certain level of undeniable genius; Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Jimmy Page, etc. Whereas those who were basically also rans, yer R. Kellys and whoever, tend not to get the same benefit. How on earth Hansard seems to have fallen into the first set, that's the mystery to me!
