To be fair, he had an longtime presence in the states. He toured with Jeff Buckley for instance, and that wasn't recent.

Maybe it's a generational thing, but I had no idea he was this famous, like I knew of him (and yes, I heard stuff about his fondness for young women), but without getting further into than that, I'm baffled by the level of outpour, I'd have thought of him as some sort of Aslan level artist, and yet he has legitimate worldwide superstars all paying respect, even Obama's at it.

I get it's my ignorance, I only know him as the guitarist from the Commitments (never watched Once), but it does make you wonder how his music didn't crack the zeitgeist in the same way his apparent peers have, was he just a really good networker?

The Frames had a very respectable level of recognition back in the late 90s, early 2000s. Was it For The Birds that Steve Albini produced?
His success was by no means a fluke. I'm also one of those who has been a somewhat casual fan (I still love Fitzcarraldo) and saw them in Whelans back in the day and any whispers of poor conduct from him are news to me this week.
Perhaps there were always rumblings that I wasn't aware of. What is mad is how loud these seem to be on the week of his death. Bizarre altogether. That's the Internet for you though.

It'a factual, there's footage and photos of them together. Buckley even played in the touring Commitments band at one stage. They met at Sin É, where Buckley recorded his debut EP. I might be wrong but I think Buckley supported, or was a roadie for Hansard or The Frames.

There was an RTE radio doc a few years ago that featured it. They drank and did gigs in the same pub in New York, am nearly ceratin that Hansard was in Jeff Buckleys band for a gig or two. Buckleys first gig outside of America was the trinity ball.

I think the most recent Jeff Buckley documentary touched on it, Hansard might have been a talking head. Not sure, I watched it around the same time as the Fergus O'Farrell and Mic Christopher ones, and he appeared in those a good bit.

I don't recall him from the Jeff Buckley one, but if he appeared it wouldn't have evoked any interest in me (as with a fair fraction of the talking heads in it). Haven't seen the other two.

Apparently John Brenner of Revelation has died at 59. A part of me had hoped that the reigniting of Warning, with Patrick Walker citing Brenner as an important influence on his writing, might somehow kick-start Revelation. Pity that will never happen now. I know nothing about the man, but I have a few Revelation albums in the collection and always felt they were a unique entity. RIP to an underground legend.

I saw that earlier, not a band I've delved into properly, though last year I did pick up a copy of a Rise Above doom comp from the early 90s with Revelation, Cathedral, Solitude Aeternus etc.

I spent this evening with a friend of Hansard, going back decades. He was effusive about the man and some of the stories he told me put him (gesture) up there, to the point of him being a serious sound out guy.

Inevitably I had to ask him about the rumours and insinuations and he said he'd never seen any sign of that kind of carry on in the 25 years he'd known him. I pushed it as far as I could and he was resolute.

Make of that what you will. This man is a father of a daughter who would have been of that age and presence at the time.
