I have seen Once, own the soundtrack and most Frames/Swell Season/solo Hansard albums, I'm a longtime fan. I'm a regular drinking buddy of someone who was in 'the scene' back in their heyday, would have been a promoter then and he's never mentioned it. I'm not denying it, simply saying it's all new information to me.

Likewise, saw them countless times in Whelans back in the day, casually knew some people involved, first I'm hearing of it, too. Yeah, the age of yer one when they met isn't a great look but she doesn't mention anything in the #metoo age. Again, not saying it's not true but it's brand new to me.

The film wasn't up to much, I agree, but the song is really good. Thankfully I somehow avoided the endless cover versions. It was all Damien Rice out my way.

The film wasn't up to much, I agree, but the song is really good.

"really" good? Get away out of that. I'm not saying that general kind of music can't be good, but that tune is wholly based around being as forcedly emotionally overwrought as possible. And the lyrics, that thing that's often the only saving grace in that genre, would be cringe from a teenager, let alone a lad who was in his mid 30s. Although I guess he wanted to be sure they wouldn't go over the heads of his targets. Eh, I mean, target audience. Woop woop!

I think it's a simple, beautiful tune. The two voices compliment each other well. The guitar and piano work beautifully together. I like songs that transcend theirs boundaries-  I'm thinking of the song Dose Dager by Naervaer as something similar. Very minimal and humble in its composition and delivery, yet undeniably more! Now, I'm not saying the Hansard tune is THAT good (not much is), but I think they achieve a lot with very little.

Heard the rumours only a few months back when someone pointed out the sizeable age gap along with what he said in interviews which surprised me regards the outpouring. Beyond hearing that Once song, I kept well away from the whingey singer songwriter era of the mid 00s onwards. He had a good voice for sure, some clips I've seen him singing with Eddie Vedder he holds his own, if not better than Eddie who is top tier singer in many peoples eyes.

Maybe it's a generational thing, but I had no idea he was this famous, like I knew of him (and yes, I heard stuff about his fondness for young women), but without getting further into than that, I'm baffled by the level of outpour, I'd have thought of him as some sort of Aslan level artist, and yet he has legitimate worldwide superstars all paying respect, even Obama's at it.

I get it's my ignorance, I only know him as the guitarist from the Commitments (never watched Once), but it does make you wonder how his music didn't crack the zeitgeist in the same way his apparent peers have, was he just a really good networker?
