Hail Conjurer - earth penetration (fin)

Black metal of the experimental/outsider variety. Typical Finnish you might say. It's quite raw/unproduced in one way yet catchy and accessible in another. There's plenty of synthy soundscape type stuff in there amongst the bedrock of BM. Quite hard to describe 

I have this on cassette and whenever I got it it just got buried and never really got in to it. Been listening to the other numerous releases on spoitify now and they are similarly interesting. Probably would appeal to fans of Urfaust, ride for revenge, circle of ouroborus etc

I used to listen to the odd JR podcast before he went to Spotify. He had a great knack for interviewing people, that's his biggest skill, which I think is being glided over. I have no interest in defending him because he seems to have given plenty of airtime to dodgy dealers, and doesn't have the insight to be able to challenge them where needed, but I think the reason he became so popular is that his show is often very engaging. He interviews all sorts so much of it was not of any interest to me, but some of the episodes I listened to were great craic.

I'd be with you there. I used to listen to Rogan on and off. Found it decent craic and interesting if you were prepared not to take everything as gospel. Shortly after he endorsed Trump and the subsequent election I stopped tuning in. Not because I'd be ideologically against that side but it felt the discourse was leaning too much towards that one side and I'm not interested in divisive, partisan shit at this stage of my life.

On the AI thing.... I'm not sure how it will all play out. If you are employed by tech, for sure you will be on the chopping block. I work two jobs/careers. One in agriculture and one in healthcare. AI ain't gonna dose lambs or dagg the dirty arses of ewes, wean, shear, dip, fence, pull lambs at birth etc etc etc. In healthcare its all an inefficient mess and in my corner of it much of that is on purpose. People are fucking around doing full time 'jobs' 40 hours a week with nearly nothing to show for it. It's going on years. It's a jobs for the boys scenario. I got paid a few quid today to fill out some horseshit questionnaire from some medical research company. Pure waffle and time wasting but everyone involved is getting paid. Think of the lads in county council offices! We will dream up some way to keep being 'employed', AI or not.

I've only listened to the new album on Spotify a few times. Less than 5 times. I was hotly anticipating it but none of those listens have done anything for me. Quite incredible really seeing as WFAD is one of my favourite albums of all time. The vocals are annoying. There's no doom. Watching somehow worked despite being very un-metal in its fragility and weakness. Incredible album. Maybe I should buy the new one and give it proper time. I'm not a fan of the introspective misery at all though. 

Any insiders with news on the upcoming release?

An unreal band albums 2, 3 and 4 in particular are superb. Formless is on its own planet. AMC I have always had such a soft spot for. I love the big drums Andy Mclove didn't in a comment a few years back in this thread  In fact I think Timmys drumming is an underappreciated element in their greatness. Such a natural style

In Bergen you should drop in to Apollon bar for an hour or two if you like craft beer. It doubles as a record store and has some metal in it. Beer was great the couple of times I was there.

Fantoft church is only a short train ride out of bergen as well if you want to visit a bit of BM related history.

They have a UK tour on in the winter. Any talk of an irish date? They would have done well here back in the day I'd imagine post wfad.

I might end up sounding like a smug cunt here, but that's not my intention. I just saw a post of my own from 2018 about being hungover and realised how nice it is to be off the booze. I gave up drinking 3 years ago and never looked back. I can't say I've noticed massive health benefits as such, but not having a write off Sunday because I stayed up half the night on Saturday is a blessing. I'm sure it's doing my body good too, but that I can see  The ravages of time are undoing whatever good sobriety is doing perhaps, but still! Recommended for anyone who is thinking of giving up. And zero beers are the business, by the way. At a gig or in the pub with friends or whatever, having that taste of beer without the inconvenient side effects is a winner. You feel like you're having the real experience of being in the pub which you can't really replicate with a glass of Coke. Great on the weekend to unwind as well, because the habit is well enough ingrained- I get to still enjoy that weekend feeling without being mouldy the next day. Anyway, if you're thinking of doing it but feel like you'll be missing out somehow by not being gimped at the weekend, give a zero beer a try. Might be the job!

Kids gone to bed, wife watching some shite, work day done, I have 2 maybe 3 beers and sit listening to physical format music (usually metal). Then go out for a small joint and hit the sack. It's a formula that works for me.

I tried the zero stuff before. You are missing the first little kick,the first sense of relaxation that makes alcohol so alluring. Fair play if it does the job for you and I've heard many others say similar but it's pure empty for me.

I drink a couple of beers nearly every night so tried the non drinking due to the constant health alarm bells you are reading about everything lifestyle related in recent years and the subsequent guilt/anxiety it was causing me. I did about 2 weeks of dry January once and fucking hell it was savage grim. I'm definitely some class of an alcoholic but the thoughts of giving up beer only to live to a bitter, raging, decrepit but teetotal 90 years old is fucking depressing 

You seem to think comparing to the Shankill Butchers is me downplaying. That's a very odd and inaccurate conclusion: it's quite the opposite.

Fair enough man I might have picked it up wrong. Though there is an element of defending foreign criminals with the "sure look at ourselves!" thing in general. Maybe that's where i was going with that. And to be honest I would actually view the loyalists as more "our lads" than the man from the darkest jungles of the world. Friends, family all of that persuasion. But I suppose it al boils down to idealists vs realists at the end of the day.

The problem people have with this stuff is not that hard to comprehend. While recognising every section of society has a problem with violent degenerates,  it's particularly galling when extreme violence is perpetrated by an immigrant who is in a certain country for the benefits and protections it gives him. It's somehow more 'unnecessary' than homegrown violence. Pretty simple?

One of the benefits of not being on Social Media is not getting those videos just popping up on the timeline.

There's only certain social media they turn up on, and only if you follow certain types of accounts. I'm sure members of my family have shared it, but I already have all those ones muted. Thankfully such technology didn't exist when, say, the Shankill Butchers were operating.

This was a big deal 20 or so years ago. They were good times in the death metal scene and in the Irish scene. I haven't listened to this album in probably 15 years. To be honest it's aged a bit. I was listening to 90s Immolation earlier and this stuff is weak in comparison. A bit of a fad band probably.

Where did you get them Andy? Been interested in that band for years but only a youtube listener thus far.

It's deadly. A natural continuation of the Watching style. While there's a few hints of 40 watt sun in there for me it's actually far more Warning than I would have expected. Super excited to hear more.

Is there talk of gigs over here? I never saw them originally either. Only 40WS which never did much for me. It would be lovely to see them surrounded by other middle aged, balding doomsters crying over our respective mid life crises
