Quote from: StoutAndAle on February 14, 2023, 03:39:38 PMNot sure where else to put this;

Anyone know the name of the ZZ Top song that appears to share a lot its riff DNA with Foghat's "Slow Ride"? Sound like it's from earlier in their career.

Heard it somewhere the other day - first I thought that it was Foghat but the vocals sounded more like Billy Gibbons. Couldn't get to my phone in time to try to identify it.

A cursory skim of the lesser known tracks on their 1970s albums has not borne fruit.

EDIT: Might not be ZZ Top! Sounded like them though.

Sounds a bit like "Someobody Else has been shaking your tree" to these ears- first part anyway. Great song

Thanks for that - it sounds a bit like the song I heard but (in my memory) it was almost a clone of the Foghat track.

Like I said - might not even be ZZ Top.

Just found out that Lori Black, former bassist of the Melvins, is Shirley Temple's daughter, bit mad.

Never buy cheap cream crackers.

Remember those army surplus para-boots that seemingly every second person had back in the early to mid 1990s?

I got a pair when I was about 12 because my buddy's cool older brother had them. I wore the shit out of them but I kept them polished. then got them re-soled and did it again and again... They were my school shoes, my going out with the lads boots, my work boots... I had them well into my early-30s.

I threw them out a few years ago because I hadn't worn them in a while even though they were still OK.

I am sorry to fuck that I binned them. Can't find a photo online of the exact ones either.

Vintage - as the children say.

TL:DR - Remember army surplus shops owned and run by genuine nutcases? Places where you could buy boots, a flick comb, a Black Widow catapult, a German army parka and a pellet gun at the age of 12.

Were they not all like that?   There was no cooler place to go when you were that age. And don't forget they were also where you bought your schoolbag too!

Boots, jackets, combats, bags and yes, a Black Widow catapult when I was a kid. Those moleskin jackets lasted forever, I lived in them for decades.

Yeah, man - those are similar - mine didn't have the vented padded top/tongue and pull tab at the top - but pretty close.

Oh yeah. The canvas schoolbag - great for writing band names onto but shit for carrying your books.

There's a place in Boston and another down in The Bowery in New York that are still like that. Reminiscent of the one-armed lad from "The Simpsons". Mad fuckers who you half expect to hit hard into a Viet-fuckin'-NAAAAAAAAAM flashback while you ask about a pair of Dickies trousers.

German paratrooper boots, there were a few small variations in the 1990s. Best boots I ever wore, you'd look like a fuckin eejit in Doc Martens beside them

I stopped buying Dr Martens about 5 or 6 years ago. Ever since they moved the production to China, the quality has gone to shit. I had a pair where the sole split on me after 5 months. Tough shit was DM's response. Docs are €200 a throw these days.

I've been wearing Red Wings ever since. Iron Rangers, 875s, Sawmills and Harvesters.

I bought a pair of Red Wing Harvesters a few years ago and they are the business. If you're serious about footwear there's not a lot of better companies out there. They're similar to that paraboot but not at the same price-point as the old surplus boots though!

How did Living Colour write and record such a great song in Cult of Personality and then let the guitarist ruin it with such a wank guitar solo.

I picked up a pair of steel toe Docs a few years ago and they are going strong. I must have got a lucky pair.

I used to do my clothes shopping in Army Bargains off Capel St in the 90s. It was the ex army combats myself and my mates used to go for so they were already worn in. I remember one of the lads got a pair spattered with red paint or something. They were, like, soooo cooool
