That referendum coming up....

The lads are up to something, mark my words. The referendum that nobody wanted or asked for or needed but all of a sudden it's essential to move with the times. Get a fucking grip if you're thinking of voting yes because this is represented by the very same lads that just voted against screwing the vulture funds about a week ago. It won't be for you, but the current wording is obviously a barrier to something or else the lads wouldn't be looking to change it. It's that simple really; tell me why or fuck off.

Have any of you checked your status on the voting register lately? You've been removed, in case you didn't know.

Shenanigans abound... change my mind, government lovers

I'm on it, although I had to enter my details again. I think it was adding PPS numbers to the profiles. Don't know that anyone was actually removed.

Enquired twice, never got an answer. Can you still check it in the post office I wonder?

That's what I've done, went through the steps twice, months apart. Ends with a promise of an answer by email. I've never gotten one.

I have had absolutely no exposure to this positively or negatively online or in any media - I have dropped off all social media bar IG and it doesn't get a mention there, and I don't watch the news.  I knew it was happening and roughly what it was for so I went and read the changes to it there.  I see absolutely nothing wrong with these changes and having had to jump through the fucking gauntlet of cares and supports offered by the state meself lately (a dense and ongoing bastard of a process) I can only see this making other supports for people in different situations to my own easier to access on a broader scale.  I'll vote for it anyway.  And you know I don't have any time for the current government.

Ah right, sorry. Had done it myself a few months ago, only got a reply a couple of weeks back. I think it's the local County Council who do the checking so some might be quicker than others.

I might wander into the council office when I'm in town later so, surely they'll have a record.

Alright look at it like this.  Who does this change put at a disadvantage?  Nobody, with how I see it there.  In fact it gives advantage to a very common non-standard model of family in Ireland, unmarried couple looking after kids with only one person working, regardless of whether it is a man or a woman.  Currently it is dictated to suit a traditional model of married couple with working husband and everyone else is out of the loop.  The rewording doesn't exclude this situation and also includes a variety of possibilities.  If this makes the lives of people easier then ultimately it's a non issue.

Don't fall for your own No True Scotsman there either - "Only people who trust the government would vote for this".  That's a very nonsensical way of looking at it and is designed to make people gloss over the fact of it to align against it.  Where it is good to say no to your government and have a voice, it is fine to agree with a constitutional change they suggest and doesn't immediately mean you agree with them.

I have still read absolutely zero for or against it and only read the plain constitutional changes of it this morning and see absolutely no issue - I gave some fairly decent reasoning here and am met only with "no fuck ya you're wrong" in response.  There's no reason to play your cards so close to your chest here, can you give me a solid reason why I should vote against it?  Come on you know I'm not thick so don't play it off so easily here.

Edit: as an addition to how I would weigh it up - if it puts you at no disadvantage but helps out people outside of your current situation, where is the problem voting for it?  I would like to think people would weigh up something that affected me the same way.  I have been lucky that no constitutional change has been needed to improve my life really.  This has no affect on me but can do on a huge score of people so I would rather wish them well with a vote.

Call your local city council. I got a letter to resubmit there before Christmas. Called because it was red beside my PPS number. The girl said nobody was removed, it was just an updating exercise to get people who were on there a while to add their PPS number.

Roderic O'Gorman has decided that it would not be in the "public interest" to publish the minutes of sixteen government meetings which examined the consequences of amending the constitution in the upcoming referendums in relation to tax laws, social welfare laws, pension laws, allocation of family assets, alimony and allowance including the laws in relation to family reunification for asylum seekers.

If the last few years have thought us anything it should be if the Government want you to vote yes on something then it most likely is not in your best interest.

Could you unpack a little bit the claim that over the last few years a majority of the referendums the government wanted the Irish people to vote yes on were not in their best interest??

Where did I say the last few referendums? I am referring to the Governments actions over the last few years with its unwillingness to listen to what the people want.

I agree the government should listen to what the people want, for example via referendums, which I'd be for more of. But that involves trusting that the people, in the main, are capable of sufficiently weighing up the actual issues for themselves rather than having to rely on mental shortcuts like "the government want me to vote yes, so I'll vote no." If what the people want is worth listening to, then the people are able to make up their own minds based on the issues, not on blanket anti-state paranoia. Which way do you want it?
