Quote from: blessed1 on April 01, 2026, 11:32:44 AMI think Brave New World is excellent and Dance Of Death has some great songs but after that I didn't rate anything bar a few songs on AMOLAD and Final Frontier. The ones that came after them are terrible.

I think Bruce Dickinson's solo stuff from Accident Of Birth on pisses all over Maidens recent stuff. Chemical Wedding is one of the best Heavy Metal albums from the 1990s imo.
I'd swap around BNW and DoD, otherwise completely agree. I've listened to Book of Souls once or twice, don't think I even got through a full playthrough of Senjutsu

Mostly agree. Brave is brilliant, they were rejuvenated and firing on all cylinders. I'll never forget how disappointed I was with Dance of Death, absolutely appalling, going through the motions. Awful artwork and lyrics. The title track, No More Lies, Journeyman etc are pure cringe. Especially Dance of Death, sounds like a jig.

I like the song Dance Of Death. The jig part is ridiculous but the rest of the song is great and I like the lyrics. I still think that song and Paschendale are the last two good long songs they did. Maybe I would add in When The Wild Wind Blows too.

I remember being down in Galway for my birthday when Dance of Death came out. I was having a mooch in Zhivago on Shop Street, and they put on what I thought was a sped-up ripoff of South of Heaven. Nope, it was Rainmaker!

Brought my haul to the counter, was mostly metal so your man asked was I buying the new one. And I says going off the track he just played, defo not.

Plot twist is Rainmaker and Montesegur are probably the only two listenable tracks on it. I've fully come round to the idea that it's their low point with Dickinson.

BNW is a banger, as is AMoLaD.

I know I liked Book of Souls at the time but I cannot remember a note of it now. Senjutsu was unbelievably boring and I've never returned to it since the first listen.

DoD was one of the first Maiden I got, so probably why I hold it in high regard, its in their top 5 for me. Paschendale easily the highlight, but Montsegur, Rainmaker, Journeyman, Face in the Sand are all brilliant

Still can't excuse the artwork though and Harris deserves a slap for signing off on that. Commissioning Dave Patchett for a piece and instead of something Cathedral-esque he went with the dancing baby from the 90s. No wonder Patchett refused credit

Came here to pretty much type this word for word.

AMOLAD onwards has seen some pretty weak points, must be said.

I tried to give the 2000s stuff a go a few weeks ago, couldn't get into them at all, remember thinking the opening track on Dance of Death was very good but other than that they're all very by the numbers.

I honestly don't believe anyone, including the band, has ever made it to the end of the last few albums. I almost made it to the end of one song, but after the 94th repetition of the chorus which was the song title, whatever it was, repeated twelve times, I sent my ears to the crematorium to be reduced to ash.

I think I only finished The Book Of Souls once, that rock opera at the end is fucking ghastly. Not bad apart from that but the usual things (too long songs, Harris thinking bass solos are acceptable) kill it.

How long is Senjutso out now, 2/3 years? I bought it on release but still haven't listened to it properly. Sad when you consider they were once my favourite band - and the '80s albums are still my favourite metal albums.

This DOD being a top five is still blowing my mind. Which of these is sacrificed to accommodate DOD?

Iron Maiden, Killers, NOTB, Powerslave, Piece of Mind, Somewhere in Time, SSOASS?

Lunacy!

DOD in the top 5 is ludicrous, but at least we can all agree that Killers is their best album.

DOD got me back into Maiden after giving up on them during the '90s, but no way is it top 5 material.

Neither is Killers I reckon, I'd have most of the Brucie '80s albums and the debut ahead of it. It's still a fantastic album, and was my first Maiden album to buy as a ladeen, but such is the quality of the '80s material that there are a few others above it.
