Deep Purple's Roger Glover produced this
1976

As expected, great playing on this  8)

'Secret Agent' even has a DP sound to it in the main verse :)

Yeah it's his best-sounding album for sure. And probably my favourite (along with "Tattoo"). Last one to feature his best band as well.

Fuck it, even though I was Rory'd out at the festival the other week, gonna stick this on now. Edit - forgot how good that drum sound is on the intro to "Do You Read Me" 8)

I never really gave Rory's studio albums much of a go. From the tiny bit I listened they always sounded a bit generic and bland to me. Irish Tour '74 is one of my favourite albums of all time though. His Live in Europe one is also great. If I was gonna give the studio stuff another go are Calling Card and Tattoo the two to try then?

Self Titled and Deuce are the best for me. Haven't checked anything after Top Priority but like everything up to that.

Pile binge at the moment. Delighted to see they're playing Dublin in November. They were amazing last tim I daw them

If you're into Irish Tour '74 defo give Tattoo a listen - four of the Irish Tour tracks are from it (Cradle Rock, Tattoo'd Lady, A Million Miles Away, and Who's That Coming).

Calling Card has a nicer mix of tunes than his earlier stuff - the title track is jazzy, Moonchild is almost proggy, Barley & Grape Rag would be my favourite acoustic number of his).

His power trio albums are patchy but have some great riffing and individual tracks - Philby and Bad Penny from Top Priority, and Shadowplay from Photo Finish in particular. Heck, I swear by the latter being a blueprint (pun not intended) for Iron Maiden.

I also agree with Open Face Surgery that his self-titled is right up there as well.

100% get how some of his gear could come off as generic. 'Tis the blues, after all.

Jinx and Fresh Evidence are solid enough too (I just realised that Defender has completely passed me by).

You probably know "The Loop" (from Fresh Evidence) from a show that used to be on BBC Ulster in the 1990s.

Swans: Birthing

Apocalyptic so far, 2 tracks in.

Edit: Jesus, he's actually channelling Bowie on I Am A Tower.

Edit 2: Really good album, intense throughout yet ends on a surpisingly upbeat note.

Tears For Fears: Songs From The Big Chair

Myself and Barry/Bane keep a shared Spotify playlist where we just chuck anything into it as it occurs to us.

He recently added D.A.F "Der Mussolini". Had never heard of these lads before, and now I'm fucking obsessed.

Coroner do a cool cover of that song

Yep, just released the other day. Supposedly the last of their 'big sound' albums. I presume they'll go back to the sound of My Father Will Guide Us..., not a million miles away from the Angels Of Light stuff. Sure he's 70-odd now and near deaf with it.

Indeed. I still find myself drifting back to it, never experienced anything like it. Mad to think it was nearly two years ago already.

The Cure: Mixes Of A Lost World

A mixed bag (no pun intended) as all such releases are, some great remixes and some generic, forgettable ones. Not sure this album needed three remixes of each track but Smith obviously did. I think they've squeezed enough out of it at this stage, this is the fourth version of it now. Maybe a live album from the tour, I'd enjoy that.

As a famed Swans enthusiast the new album, much like the 2 that came before it   has absolutely left me cold. Really can't be fucked with anything after Children of God at this stage, and I still think the "Body To Body" comp is the best document of that era.

That Shearling band I mentioned hit the spot a lot better for me nowadays

A Winged Victory For The Sullen - S/T

I saw them in Cork on this album
It was life changing; well, my musical life!

The Orb – The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld

 Great sounds on this
