There's some kind of rumour/story according to which this is (or at some stage was) Harrison Ford's favourite album. Pretty run of the mill virtuoso stuff, bizarre all the same.

So was asking about some other stuff he'd listen to, and he says other than Maiden he doesn't really like metal. Found it very strange how he could be so big into one band, but have zero interest in anything else similar

It's quite a common thing for some reason within a certain cross section of Maiden fans. Especially the stamp collectors who want every shirt, single variant, album format etc. Little to no interest in anything else. Encountered quite a few over the years.

It popped into my head to revisit Gorement. I picked up a reissue of The Ending Quest years ago but it didn't really click and I left it on the shelf. Time to see if its time has come... but, the "random" bit, if that's even the right word, is that I had it in my head all this time that they were French and only now realise they were Swedish. I must have known they were Swedish at the time I bought the CD. Dunno where the confusion came in.

I don't find that odd at all because 90% of what I listen to is metal and I can't stand Maiden. Don't like Judas Priest, Megadeth and lots of those other mainstream metal bands either. Old Metallica and Black Sabbath would be the only mainstream / classic metal stuff I can think of that I am into.

The eps are great, but as is often the case with bands of that era (see also Eucharist) the full length is flattened by terrible sound. A lot of those bands are better in short bursts.

This used to drive me crazy when I was younger, the lads I'd hang out with listened to Metallica/Megadeth/Pantera/black Sabbath but anything deeper than that they didn't give a fuck about, acted like I pretending to like all the other stuff or that I was some sort of snob because I got bored of that stuff pretty fast. They're the "I used to be/still am a rocker" knows the classics type music fans now.

You're right, nothing worse than the "I love Iron Maiden but don't listen to metal crowd", I've met a load of them in person and online. They always tend to love the newer albums more as well.

I always thought the most annoying Maiden fans were the I hate Bruce, they were better with Paul crowd.   Thankfully there isn't many if them about these days.

I think the first album is one of their best, if not THE best. But sure. I like ol' Bruce too. I have even considered picking up the what's his name's ones...

This is almost everyone I know into "metal". Some of them legitimately think I'm trolling them.

Then I've a mate who's into all the obvious bands, plus a few more. He's a big Sabbath fan, played him some Trouble, Candlemass, Pentagram, The Obsessed. He thought they were all decent, but zero interest in actually listening to them (vs. spinning Paranoid for the zillionth time). Same vibe with Merciful Faith - played some Portrait, but it never stuck.

A friend of mine was blasting Black Sabbath's 'Heaven and Hell' while stuck in a traffic jam in Cork today (not sure which song).
Some randomer flung a slice of cheese in through the passenger window at him (easy-single, still wrapped), called him a 'Devil Man' and tore off up the hard shoulder 🤷
