In my twenties I was a bit more open to investigating some of the martial industrial/ noise/ ambient stuff (not to mention the likes of Ministry and NIN or Bile who were on the listening roster throughout the 90s) but I lost interest in all of it along the way. This morning I kind of randomly decided to listen to mz.412 and I started at the beginning (I think) with their 'Malfeitor' album. It captured my imagination immediately. It's minimal and very dark but with really catchy looped beats and hypnotic gas mask breathing on the first song. It sounded thoroughly cold and inhuman but in a really interesting way. It prompted me to pull Arditi's 'Standards of Triumph' off the shelf for a long overdue revisit. It's on here now and it ain't bad but maybe not as intriguing to me as mz.412.

I know there are a few people here who like this stuff and are bottomless wells of knowledge so any recommendations of the slightly more dismal gothy end of the spectrum would be appreciated.

I'm not interested in harsh noise or drone, I'm after something more structured if that makes sense. But feel free to contradict my expectations if necessary...

First thing that came to mind based on the mz.412 mention was this compilation by the same guy under a different name:

I am far from an expert, mind but this is a favourite. Do some digging, there's an expanded version out there.

Cool, I'll give that a look.

For something closer more rhythmic try Kollaps

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97OLTRB9zLE  or Echo Beds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI4OEiGTrI0, and maybe have a spint through recent releases on the Phage tapes label which goes from harsher stuff through to things that sound like NIN/Front 242

The two upcoming Intensive Care albums are worth keeping an eye out for too.

If you like MZ412 I'd say Trepaneringsritualen is a safe bet

For me, Himuklat is the best in the game right now, but her stuff might be closer to harsh noise in places than your tastes might allow

Great thread actually as it's something I dip in and out of from time to time. I look forward to listening to the recommendations. I quite enjoy Gnaw Their Tongues output.

Not into GTT really. I appreciate the madness but I never feel the need to revisit it!

Cheers Jamie. I'll bate through that list.

All Your Sisters worth a bit of a shout here I think.

Straight forward industrial, well written tunes, mixed elements of other genres in there but goth-y in parts.

I am fond of industrial meself but dip in and out of it, having went for heaps in my teens but nowadays going for old ministry, foetus, NIN, and then more into industrial metal I suppose.  Going to check out the recs in this thread and stick a few more in as I think of them.

I feel like "industrial" is as much a blanket term as "metal" in being a generalisation for an area of music with many often disparate parts,  Like there's a huge gulf between Arditi and Nurse With Wound or Kontravoid and The Rita but the term gets used to lump them all in, and someone who likes one might hate the others. Everything from Neofolk to Power Electronics gets in under that heading.

I'm more of a noise/drone person, or the kind of vaguely "band" type things I posted above for example, not a huge fan of the poppier/dancier gothy stuff (though I love NIN and All Your Sisters), and I find  military industrial stuff laughable in the same ultra pompous way I find a lot of BM..though I love early Laibach at the same time. Big Whitehouse fan but a lot of the Power Electronics stuff they inspired is cringe level bad. It's constantly mutating.

Really enjoying this new God Is War stuff, his projects are pretty intriguing overall

I mentioned Intensive Care earlier, here's a track from one of the new albums "Antibodies" which is the more straight up electronic one.

I'm always going to recommend Coil as an amazing starting point for exploring the many forms of industrial music. They simaltaneously had elements all of them at various points, but sounded unlike any other band. I'd start with "Backwards" even though it's probably not one of my favourite albums of theirs. You can definitely see where NIN got a lot from (NIN always struck me as Coil x Depeche Mode with some more rock elements thrown in)

I feel like the old Cold Meat Records stuff and current Cold Spring/ Tesco Organisation records catalogue might be more specific to what you're after Andy.

Yeah, I think I'll have a sweep through the Cold Meat Industry back catalogue and see what jumps out.

I'm not well versed in this either but definitely went through a huge NIN phase in my teens, still a big fan. It spurred me on to make droning ambient music in those years, but I never went further down the spiral. KMFDMs Opium 1984 is their earliest and most experimental work I'd say, and might be of interest. Noise and sampling across styles but very much a musical composition.

Those Kollaps and Echo Beds songs sound good to me. I'll have to investigate further.

This ain't bad. Not sure it's the kind of thing I'd return to a lot to be honest, but it has a strong NIN buzz.

Skinny Puppy area an obvious one I guess. Too Dark Park is one of my favourite albums.

I'm just going to wait and see what Pentagrimes throws in here and go for a few of those
