Marduk - Memento Mori 9/10
I've always preferred Marduk's more pragmatic approach to Black Metal as opposed to the incense and esoterica bands. A blizzard of ice cold riffs and a grim discourse on our frail mortality made this a highlight of 2023 here.

Zyklon - Aeon 8.5/10
Some bemoaned the fact that the former Emperor and Myrksog members moved away from the Black Metal leanings of their debut here but I thought this was some clinical and utterly crushing Death Metal at the time. I still do.

Jade - Mysteries of A Flowery Dream 7.5/10
Atmospheric Death Doom that was very high up on a  lot of folks end of year lists for '25, didn't grab me quite so much for some reason but a good listen regardless.

Mutiilation - Pandemonium of Egregores 7.5/10
Evil Postman darkened my doorstep with this last week after it was shat out by Osmose in the wake of Xmas, lo-fi and stripped down to the rotting bones as ever, Mutiilation's zero fucks given Black Metal invariably hits the spot, albeit with a touch more melody this time around.

Savatage - Streets 7/10
The narrated, melodramatic 1991 rock opera revolving around a drug addict rockstar who I have about as  much empathy for as Blackie's buck in The Crimson Idol, none. Some great tunes here but fluffing it out with an excess of piano driven Broadway style pieces leaves it all feeling a bit, well, pompous.

Unbounded Terror - Nest Of Affliction 6/10
Some good old DM stodge from Spain, 1992 debut very much in the vein of early Benediction; basic but brutal. No problem at all listening to foot soldiers like this plying their trade but it does make you reflect on how the likes of Chuck and Trey took the genre to whole new levels.
