Tribulation  - the formulas of death

Hadn't heard a note of Tribulation since the disappointment of the Children record. Coming after Formulas, which must be one of my most loved albums, I was absolutely mad about it at the time, I think I just buried them and moved on. I haven't even listened to TFOD in years. I think I just thought this band isn't for me anymore.

It passed me by that they have just released a new - sub rosa something- but it must have popped up somewhere cos I gave it a shot yesterday and am loving it. Great vocals. It's obvious but I can't quite think who he reminds me of? Songwriting seems strong. It's way better than the Formulas-lite of Children.

Of course I had to stick back on TFOD then. What a fucking album. There was a great buzz around that time they were on Invictus. Couple of good gigs here too if I remember.
The vocals on the new album remind me a lot of Moonspell.

I think it was Michael Gira/Swans I was thinking of. Just came to me there.

I love Tribulation, I thought their second last album Where gloom becomes sound was great, new one not really gelling yet.

Listening to The morning never came  by Swallow the Sun, fantastic.

Quote from: Thorn on January 13, 2025, 09:45:30 PMI was on a bit of a Cathedral buzz today too, picked up a cheap best off thing from Earache called The Serpent's Gold on Amazon, very rarely would I buy a best off but this has an entire 2nd disc full of demo versions and rarities. So many good tunes over the two discs, what a band they were.

It's kinda criminal how they don't get enough praise. Rarely get mentioned on so called "essential doom" lists while. They're fucking savage.

Concrete Winds - Primitive Force 8.5/10
                  Nerve Butcherer 8.5/10
First two Concrete Winds in heavy rotation this week ,some serious playing on these, eye of the hurricane stuff that flays your skin at every turn with those insidious hooks and riffs.

Incantation - Unholy Deification 8/10
2023's mighty opus from the Death Metal Overlords, a bit more all out aggression than dirge these days but all killer.

Skelethal - Within Corrosive Continuums 8/10
This was high up on last year's favourites list for me and now the vinyl has arrived complete with giant poster and one of the coolest collages I've seen in a while, it looks like they're going to be hanging around a while yet.

Toxikull - Under The Southern Light 7.5/10
This one I've been listening to online because I recieved two of the album covers as stiffeners in a Dying Victims package. I'll have to buy it now because it's very cool honest to goodness trad/power Metal from Portugal in the vein of Accept, Warlock, Dio etc..

Lucifer's Hammer - Be And Exist 7/10
Another band I'm coming late to (fourth album here), and they're a Chilean band who actually aren't scathing death thrash but more traditional and melodic. Might be handier to just move out there and be done with it.

Wearing jeans and leather, not crackerjack clothes

Yep Cathedral were great and redefined doom I think

Megaton Sword - Blood Hails Steel, Steel Hails Fire
Megaton Sword - Might & Power
Thin Lizzy - Thunder & Lightning

Also been listening to a bit of Levin Minnemann Rudess, which pretty much does exactly what it says on the tin:

Two legends, plus Rudess. Something about his music is just so intensely unlikable for me. It's just soulless widdling.

Myrkr - Offspring of Gathered Foulness
Blood Libel - Giftgas!
