Just putting this out there to see if anyone might be up for it.
I'm a serial maker of mixtapes and playlists and that kinda thing, and at the start of lockdown I made a few for friends as a bit of fun and something to do. Also because I'm sure like a lot of you I'm working at home currently I've always got the tunes on in the background
Just wondering would folk here be up for making playlists or mixes or whatever?Maybe either to swap with other posters or even post here so we have a thread of them?

I would definitely listen to playlists from several of the posters here. One in particular I would love is Ducky's "beginner bands" mixtape! :P
No, but that does sound like a good idea to me.
What do you do to make them? Just string the songs together in soundforge or similar then upload to soundcloud??
Cool idea. Im listening to a 'Kurt Cocaine' inspired electro list for running these days, best keep that to myself for now though.
Yeah there's a couple of programs you could use if you're savvy - I use Audacity for example - and then throw them on mixcloud or soundcloud, or just provide a download link.
Even a link to a Spotify playlist or something like that would be ideal, so many people use that and it's not difficult to make a playlist there.
Only rules are they have to be metal based I guess (that provides plenty wiggle room) and maybe keep them around the hour mark?
That sounds interesting but down here in the sticks broadband ain't so broad, uploading is not for the impatient. I'll give it a shot though. What are the copyright considerations uploading to Soundcloud, do you have to declare artists and such?
No idea really. TBH I usually use Mixcloud which is all fine and gives you space to actually list the artists. I think with Soundcloud maybe just don't post the tracklist or artists?
Sound. I'll have a look at Mixcloud.
This is a great idea. I might stick a few themed ones in here but would be right interested in hearing ones that get posted.

Surprise, it's the first three Chic albums :abbath:
Seeing as a lot of folks use Spotify, would a list and a link to it suffice? Even if you don't sub it's just an add every half hour or so.
Yep. I'm updating the first post with the "how/what to do"
I'd say any format suits - might make sense to curate them as they get posted by type (mixcloud, spotify, soundcloud etc) or genre, or poster.
I'm tempted to do one up for Mixcloud but using my records, recorded into Reaper. Some common enough stuff in my collection but it might make me consider it and curate it a particular way.
Ya shpotify would be grandesht. Hup!
Well look, everyone do what suits them for now I guess - the thing is if we get into "curating" things then people who might not have or want a mixcloud account or some software to compile something get left out, conversely folks who don't give a shite about Spotify do too. I'm gonna up mine to Mixcloud as I use it anyway, and a lot of what I want to put on there isn't on Spotify, but to each their own.
Right so, a very mixed bag of old and new heft of all colours from me:

That was great, some stuff in there I'll be definitely following up on after that listen. Going to give OFS and Ducky's Spotify ones a go tomorrow in work.
That Maggot Heart song sounds like Occultation covering The Runaways. Deadly buzz, sticking the album on the listen later list.

I once put The Dillinger Escape Plan's "Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants" on a mix MiniDisc(!) for a friend as she had a vague interest in Faith No More. She was not impressed.
Will put together a more varied one as well.
Digging your's Jamie.
Lol, I used to love trying to lure people into metal with mixtapes. Start off with something handy and try graduate to the ripping stuff by the end. It never really worked though.
They were either ripe for indoctrination or they weren't!
I taped a Pixies album for someone and stuck ND's You Suffer and Dead.
Another unimpressed recipient.
It would be an absolute fallacy to indicate that the initial surge of my love of making mixtapes comes only from my teenage tape trading days - it's also from my then concurrent complete inability to talk to the opposite sex, so yeah that cartoon rings a bell  Found one I made the ex-wife there years ago recently and it's Dillinger Escape Plan, a load of grind/powerviolence and Today Is The Day hilariously enough. Ye Olde Hi Fidelity Manboy syndrome all the way, But sure lookit, I've always been a frustrated John Peel anyway so there's that too.
Should have said as well - anyone who wants me to make them one of a specific thing feel free to hit me up with a PM. EG I did one of old proto-Death Metal for Conor out of Incessant recently, and I've owed MAtt and industrial one for about..what..7 years?
I used to use any excuse to make a mixtape - loved getting a selection right down to the running length of the tape too. I used to keep a copy of my current mixtape in my backpack so if anyone was curious they could have that.
Made a friend a tape every year for his birthday. Used to call it the annual Duck Tape. Then when we got fancy/paying jobs, a CD called Disc O'Duck.
Simpler times.

Must have a go again later. Great idea in fairness. The temptation is to put in your favourite song by the band, but depending on the mood you're trying to create, you find yourself reaching for songs that you mightn't have otherwise which reveals just how class they were in the first place. The Holy Terror/Watchtower combination above was a bit mad listening back but then they're counterbalanced by Running Wild just blazing in afterwards and setting a new mood. Great craic.

I'm preferring not to look at the tracklist now as I go through these so you are sometimes hit with unexpected changes (Cro-Mags into Grave was a genius touch). The initial lockdown sucked away my creative juices but this is just what I needed to get them back. Great idea for a thread!
I've been doing the same actually, and it works great! Love the element of surprise and jarring changes also work well sometimes.

That first album has David Wayne singing on it. He was older than the rest and had been in Vietnam and it has a kind of claustrophobic, jungle fever vibe on a lot of the songs that, for some reason, always makes me think of Beneath the Remains. Holy Terror Mind Wars has that same kind of relentless vibe too. Probably just me but they all share something for me.
I definitely had a Metal Church album on tape as a kid (The Dark maybe?) and remember very little bar the tune "Start The Fire" but that track on the mix warrants further investigation.

Quote from: Pentagrimes on July 22, 2020, 11:55:26 AMQuill is that a Junji Ito pic accompanying your masterpiece?
It absolutely is, good spot, out of the Tomie chapter "Mansion". I fuckin love Ito, he's the king. In an odd tieback to the playlist, Colin Stetson (Ex Eye) is doing the soundtrack for an anime adaptation of Uzumaki, due out this year too.
I got slightly delayed with the playlists but will go through all these this evening and tomorrow morning, there's some class stuff in them looking through them. I got hospitalised last night thanks to the magic of kindey stones and only got out about an hour ago, sort of stifled my plans and workday lol
And yeah this is absolutely the deadliest thing on the forum at the minute. Proper discovery of music. I love it

I definitely had a Metal Church album on tape as a kid (The Dark maybe?) and remember very little bar the tune "Start The Fire" but that track on the mix warrants further investigation.
The Dark is cool but the first album is, in my opinion, just pure unadulterated metal genius.

I'll have a look at that mixcloud later. Is it a case of putting mp3's in a list or does it work off Spotify etc.
I want to do one with Realm's Eleanor Rigby but it's not on Spotify.
Amazing section there btw Sabs into Toxik into FW and then the Cult. Amazoballs.
Cheers. I just stitched a load of mp3s together and uploaded them as one large file. I don't use Spotify, I have bought enough CDs over the years that I would feel stupid not using and no doubt there's some old shite I'll put up on this which wouldn't be on Spotify.

Another great Salem orchid tune. It's Jason and David's pre akercocke band. The three songs from their demo are tacked onto the cd version I have of rape of the bastard Nazarene.
It's alot more riff salad than their akercocke days when they learned song composition but that song I linked up their with some of the best akercocke.
Also great thread gonna will have to get involved
yep, you bet me to it. that's actually a better song than the one I used actually haha.
Did an Irish one back in March for the band page which happens to be exactly 1 hour and 30 minutes so:

I'm cheating with this one, as it's not metal but choons from around Europe, mainly folk but with some tasty exceptions, from Scotland, France, Poland, Serbia, Germany etc. Might be of interest to some.

Bowie does a class version of that Jacques Brel song in English, thing it's on Bowie at the Beeb :abbath:
His live videos are tear jerkers (Brel), he's so into it. Never heard of him until I was in Montpellier visiting a buddy who had a fabulous French bird 7/8 years ago, spent about 5 hours drinking plonk and listening to him.
I'll give the Bowie version a spin there.
EDIT - That was fucking excellent, and I am not that partial to Bowie. Guitar works great. Neeece waaan kiiiid.

This is a really great idea for a thread, looking forward to getting stuck into some of these. I'm on lunch here so haven't read the full thread, but are people making genre specific playlists? Like only 80s thrash, 2nd wave of BM etc? That would be a good way to dive a bit deeper into some stuff I'm not familiar with.
I think most people are generally varying it up a little rather than sticking to specific subgenres, including songs from different genres but which work as a listening experience. That keeps it interesting as you're drawn to the list by one band but get exposed to others you're unfamiliar with.

I've never listened to Secret Chiefs 3. Does all their stuff have that kind of Estradasphere buzz about it??
They some quasi-ethnic folk tracks, blended with rock elements, which are my favourite tracks. Check out the songs 'the 3' and 'the 4' on YouTube, Chris. Best viewed in live version.

They're great so if you've never tried them before, you're in for a treat. It's not all like that now mind, but close. Has a bit of everything in there from Morricone-style soundtrack stuff, through heavily middle eastern inspired music, to electronic rock - really worth a fair test rather than an explanation lol. Give Book M (https://youtu.be/tm86ivBN_e8) a go to start, that could be my favourite (and has the song from the playlist on it), it's probably worth following that with Book of Souls: Folio A (https://open.spotify.com/album/4VR7WJsncPvyIKcto9hIqy?si=pcFncUUyTiuSllvofoAl-Q) if you enjoy it, then anywhere into the discog.

Deicided to get this one out of my system before going for something a little more inspired at some point when I have more time. Deicided to get this one out of my system before going for something a little more inspired at some point when I have more time. The theme is obvious, the style in the red and the blue corners, bar a couple of exceptions, is good ol' fashioned, easy listening, foot tapping, air drumming 90s death/thrash :abbath:

I give you the "Spiritual Metal Warfare" playlist:

Jesus I feel like I've unleashed a monster, I can't actually keep up with them all haha!
I was thinking about that (trying to keep up) and hopefully it doesn't get spammed to death over and over, or not even over and over, more not too quickfire as 3/4 of it will be missed and it will become the iceberg thread. Saying that, I'm putting one together because I can't resist so there is that!

It is kind of addictive, but you make a good point. I am going to leave it at three playlists.
I'm not even on about it being the same people throwing up multiples, there is nothing wrong with that either. Sure a chance to check out a load of new stuff without trawling through youtube/spotify/whatever can only be a good thing. I sort of feel duty bound to give them all a go so it's hard to keep in to it is all. Especially if I then find something to explore further. Others might feel the opposite maybe that the lists can't come quick enough, I dunno
They're there to be listened away to at your own pace sure. I'm behind on a good few but it's great to know I can just lash some of these on while i'm working / tipping away at something, without having to broach the actual iceberg of metal. I note the albums with the songs i like to check out later, and will get to them eventually lol. I've a rake of other stuff to do at home too and these will be decent soundtracks to it.
I want to listen to them all but at the same time there are loads! I'm going to put more thought into my next one and leave it at that for a while. The iceberg of metal syndrome will creep in.
The way I see it I'll be going though them at my leisure, so the more the merrier.
And for stuff that catches your ear, it's probably not just going to be one song and leave it, I can imagine most people checking out whole albums/bands. I've only gone through thrre myself and I'm stuck listening to new gear from those.
Up or down, this is the best thread I've seen on the forum (or the old one) in a very long time.
Edit - 99.99% of my music consumption is off my own back, so it's great to hear lists of stuff compiled by fellow music geeks.
I agree that this thread is brilliant. No trolling(so far) and hearing loads of new stuff is the business.
I’m gonna get through all of it as the days go on. I was thinking this evening that it will be interesting to hear what people put up as we move into Autumn and Winter.
Thought I'd join the fun....first time using audacity so forgive any clumsiness....

Believer don't really have any bad albums, first two are stone cold classics, third one more experimental, and the come-back albums more modern sounding but still good imo.
For whatever reason, christian metal bands seemed to experiment much more than their "secular" counterparts. In the case of Mortification and Tourniquet, this led to a very hit and miss discography. Mortification, first four definitely worth a go, but nothing after that. Tourniquet, try first, third (the one the above track is taken from), and if you're still gagging for more, try Microscopic View of a Macroscopic Realm. Album after that, Where Moth & Rust Destroy isn't amazing but does feature Marty Friedman. And, as discussed recently, their latest album has Ripper Owens as vocalist on several tracks, which apparently is a good thing for some ears
Convinced I have ADHD or something from my musical tastes.

Separate question: Is John Bush Anthrax worth checking out? Which album. Goddamn amazing with Armored Saint. I'd almost forgotten how damn amazing Savatage were too.
Room a Thousand Years Wide is such a savage song.
Yep, pure class

Hit and miss but We've Come For You All is the best of the Bush albums. The others have a few decent tracks spread across them, but I wouldn't rate any of the albums as a whole.
It should be noted that most people rate Sound Of White Noise highly, I think it's mostly filler myself.
A Venom playlist. One of my favourite bands! I first got into them through headbangers ball in 1996.
They were doing their original lineup reunion 'tour' and played Dynamo with Slayer in support.
I don't think their albums were easy to get at the time, particularly on CD.
I bought some dodgy compilation, with a mix of Cronos and Demolition Man songs in HMV.
In 1997, Cast In Stone came out, along with a bonus disc with re-recorded versions of some of their classic tracks.
I have included some of these re-recordings in favour of the originals, just for some variety! Easy enough to listen to the originals on Spotify.
I love both the originals and these re-recordings. Cronos' voice on the re-recordings is as evil as he has ever sounded!!
The re-recorded version of Warhead is immense!!!
And, listen to the Demolition Man live version of Witching Hour!!! Raw fucking energy!!!

I gave TSoWN a go after the chat in the other thread, and bar 'Only' it was absolutely dreadful. Will never understand the appeal of Anthrax.
Room For One More, Hy Pro Glo, Invisible, 1000 Points Of Hate & C₁₁ H₁₇ N₂ O₂ S Na are all great tunes, not pushed about Only - bought the single at the time and it put me off them for years.
A fella gave me a lend of an Anthrax album once. Can't remember the name of it but it had an 8 ball on the front (I think). Around 97/98ish. One good song on it and all the rest was bad. There was a tune called Cupajoe that I'll never forget for how shit I thought it was.
Swinging it back on topic I have three of these listened to so far. I'm catching up!
I think every forum member knows every other member's most intimate thoughts on Anthrax by this stage...

Last one from me for a bit (though drop me a pm if you want one made), this is the one I made for someone a while back. It's a themed one, all relatively lost/forgotten demo bands from the late 80s to early 90s covering the point where thrash gradually morphed into Death Metal
https://www.mixcloud.com/pentagrimes/heavy-metal-vomit-party/
INCARNIS (USA) -Shadow Side of God
NOSFERATU (SWE) - Religious Figment
FATAL(USA) - Nailed To The Unknown
CENOTAPH(Mex) - Tenerbous Apparition
MORTUARY(Mex) Abyss Angel
XYSTER(UK) - Subnormal
SINOATH(Ita) - The Raising Stillness
SATANIC HELLSLAUGHTER(Jap) - Abyss of Despair
BALVAZ(Nor) - Phlegmous
SALEM ORCHID (UK) - Nirvana of Agony
DARTH VADER's CHURCH(USA) - Resume Aggression
TRICIFIX(Ire) - Monothist
BLOODSPILL (USA) - Phantasm
Coming from such a reluctant metal-head, this might be the single most metal thing on the internet :abbath:

Cracking mixes in this thread, only hit the Spotify ones up so far (due to how my set up is set up).
Would it be worthwhile doing some not-so-metal lists in off topic or throw them in here? Could serve as a surrogate for the much beloved 'Recommend a non-metal album' thread from ye olde forum.
Start a thread in the off-topic, I'm sure it would be appreciated by many, and it's really better all round to keep the main forum as metal oriented as possible.
I had thought an off topic one would be decent as well. But then there wouldn't be any talk of Anthrax so I dunno

Now that summer's back around, anyone up for putting their own top 20 DM tracks into a mix? Going to have a think about it myself.
DM aside, I have been meaning to make another mixcloud again, rightly enjoyed it before but just had way too much other stuff to do when I sat down in front of a DAW. Might have a stab at it this week.
That list is shite. Will have a think and might lash one together.
One song per band or is it Human + Unquestionable Presence + 4 others?

Is that list suggesting that they are the best DM tracks ever or what?
I'm no expert but come on now...
I was hoping it's crapness would inspire ye

Here ye go. I went with songs and bands that were relevant to me at the time rather than the obvious ones, though there are a few of them in there too. Starting with Open Casket, which I remember Tom Hayes playing on the radio and having heard nothing else like it before and then lots of the Florida stuff I was obsessed with at the time. No real relevance to the order.

I may lash a Mixcloud or download able one together this evening so
I'm eyeing up a few tracks for a mixcloud too but I imagine it will be the weekend before it is done, maybe tonight if I get my shit together.
Didn't get involved in this at all first go round, will throw one together. Listening to a few of the originals now, great mix of stuff.

Never really done anything like this before, not really a theme other than you could tap your toe to everything on here.
Laptop shat the bed while making mine earlier, wanted to put one together with some non Spotify stuff. Grrr.
I'll try again in the coming days
Right, my mixcloud is full and I'd deleted the older ones anyway, so if there's any crossover between this and previous ones it doesn't really matter..this is very much seasonal listening, if there's a theme.
I'll do a Spotify one of more recent listening later but this is all stuff that isn't on Spotify - mostly older death/doom/black stuff ranging from the early 90s to early 10s. Enjoy or not, I do not care. As always, down to make individual mixes for folks when time allows, drop me a PM or whatever.

I've had to stop this after the second track to go and check out the full album that Dolorian track is off. That is some fucking powerful gear :abbath:
Ye, that's an amazing track. Will give the full playlist a whack over the weekend.
Very much a "they dont make em like that any more" tune. A band I completely overlooked first time round, only actually heard them for the first time about 2 years ago after knowing the name years. Teenage me would have loved them
