Not exactly metal, not exactly any one thing really, but I just saw that Edgar Wright has directed a documentary about Sparks. Didn't see that one coming!

Apologies if it's already in the thread but any good films/docs on Led Zeppelin? Either whole career or single album/period based?

Honestly, no. An authorized doc is supposedly in the making, but there's been no update in a while: https://bestclassicbands.com/led-zeppelin-documentary-5-8-21/

There are quite a lot of nice insights in It Might Get Loud, but obviously only from a Page perspective. And you could watch the Robert Plant episode of Brian Johnson's recent show. But overall, there's nothing much of interest out there, just your typical blah-blah-blah made for telly type unofficial affairs.

Watched the ZZ Top one earlier, pretty decent but could have done with going into their relationship a bit more. No other band lasted 50 odd years together with the same lineup so I'd assumed it would be a big part of it, but just got glossed over at the end

I started watching the Anthrax documentary episodes and love it. Only 8 episodes in. I think there's 40

Been meaning to check them out. Must get the ol finger out.

I don't think it'll get to 40, the one on Worship Music was no. 23. They're worth a watch alright, every major player involved has their say and it's generally positive. No Dan Nelson though!

Also, nothing so far about Frank Bello's stint in Helmet .

It was briefly mentioned alright, I can't remember what episode.

Not a specific band, but HBO's new Woodstock 99 doc - which is pretty much nu metal at its zenith - is worth a watch.

Really reconfirmed for me the notion that blaming Fred Durst for starting that riot was a disgrace. He probably could have communicated better between songs, but ultimately the organisers let him get on with the set. What was the guy going to do, drop his gimmick entirely and start doing Hawkwind tunes?

It's a decent watch. Harrowing, though. None of that schadenfreude fun you got with the Fyre stuff. It's a proper tonic for killing off late 90s nostalgia.

The narrative I'd always heard was that he was to blame alright - how come Anthony Kiedis never got a bad rap after being asked to tell the crowd to stop lighting shit on fire and instead playing "fire" by Jimi Hendrix? Very good documentary but a terrible indictment of the United States as a country tbh.

Thanks for the rec on that Woodstock 99 doc, it made for perfect break viewing today. Have to say though, as interesting as it was, by the end of it I felt I might break some shit myself if I heard one more stretched beyond the limit woke take on why what happened happened. The organizers should have known that with the bands they were billing they would need to up security, proper security, and - of course - if your amenities collapse, your crowd are going to be pissed off. But, from that, you can't conclude, as happens over and over again in the doc, that the only possible outcome of a festival with metal bands playing is chaos. I mean, as weird in itself as the protracted ad for Coachella was at the end, no one thought to mention the countless nu-style metal bands that have played at that, including RATM the very same year!

Anyway, it was fun and unexpected to see Mustaine spit on Lars over Napster, although that the Napster bit was included made me think they were going to show some frat-boys marching about bellowing "FUCK LARS!" No such luck.
