I still think Sisters of Mercy - After Hours is the heaviest non metal track. Would love to hear Spectral Voice do a demented cover of it.

As mentioned above in the thread, the last Lingua Ignota album is great. Never thought I'd enjoy an album in that style but it's seriously heavy.

Some honourable mentions:

The Cure - Pornography (whole album but particularly the title track)
Goblin - Buio Omega ost
Basil Poledouris - Conan The Barbarian ost

Heinryk Goreckis Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs.
The first movement is one of the (if not THE) most devastating pieces of music I've heard. I just listened to a couple of recent performances last night: the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra with Beth Gibbons and the Genesis Orchestra with Lisa Gerrard, both excellent.

You can't go wrong with a bit of Zombi
Surface To Air is probably my favourite album but I like them all.

Also, check out Lycia

Cold would be the album I'd recommend.

Was put on to Lycia by Pete Steele years ago. Great stuff for the time of year as well. Looking forward to getting through a few of the recs here

Swans, Cop Shoot Cop, Unsane and quite digging Human Impact feat members of CSC and Unsane.

Lydia Lunch recently revisited 13:13 which I'd recommend.

Cure wise love their miserable stuff, Pornography, Seventeen Seconds, Faith and of course Disintegration also have a soft spot for The Top.

Fields of the Nephilim, first few albums for me although they did release something quite heavy and on the industrial side later on which was okay, the name escapes me.

I'd add The Young Gods they blew me away in the Limelight many moons ago.

Van Der Graaf Generator's "White Hammer". The last few minutes (from about 6:30) sound apocalyptic.

Was released the same week or so as the first Black Sabbath album too.

That's as rock 'n' roll as a sentence gets.

I suppose Foetus will have to get a mention here. So much heavy but not metal stuff in his catalogue.

There is one, but there are so many and so varied it's tough to pick any single one

When Billy Corgan sang "Emptiness is loneliness and loneliness is cleanliness and cleanliness is godliness and God is empty just like me" he was obviously on about doing the dishes  :abbath:

So, Billy Corgan is God....  :abbath:

Swans as many have already said - Cop is a good place to start, probably the most brutal album ever recorded.

Joy Division can be quite intense.

Lots of industrial bands- Skinny Puppy for one.
