I am not sure how much of an interest people here have in rap music. I know there were a few from Metal Ireland (RIP) SO I thought I would start another thread for people  to post about what they like ( or dislike) in this genre.  What you are listening to now ? new or old?

Personally I grew up on a lot of 'old' stuff so.. lately it's been;

Wu Tang Clan: 36 Chambers (25th anniversary this year, still sounds tense, unhinged and great)

Onyx: All we Got iz Us (very, very dark and dismal rap music. Well recommended if you are into that kind of thing)

Company Flow: Funcrusher Plus ( one of the best underground hip hop albums, incredibly dense lyrically but worth the perseverence)

Cannibal Ox: The Cold Vein ( produced by EL P, Company Flow and Run the Jewels, this is a very overbearing álbum in its sounds and atmosphere but incredibly beautiful and heartfelt in parts)

Dr. Dooom: First Come, First Served ( Horrorcore courtesy of Kool Keith!)

Gore Elohim: Electric Lucifer (formally known as 'Goretex' from Non Phixion, and following on from his 2005 release 'The art of dying')

Also been meaning to get my hands on this new Beastie Boys book, has anyone looked through it?

I'd be into a lot of the old school stuff myself, lot of what's out there now is horseshit.

You've mentioned Onyx, right up my street. Still listen to Geto Boys, Das Efx , KRS One etc

The early Ice Cube and Ice T records still do it for me too, easy to forget how edgy they were compared to later output.

In terms of recent acts I'd go for Saul Williams and Dalek, hardly current at this stage so any recommendations welcome.,

Yeah, another one more in tune with the old school here. I picked up a Sugar Hill Records anthology recently, which is nice, and have been giving lots of time to the underrated Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age. It's just so funky.

New Edan & Homeboy Sandman is great. Been enjoying Crimeapple, Ankhlejon,Drrty Pharms and Westside Gunn recently.

Edan is amazing, really overlooked I think. His 'Beauty and the Beat' album from 2005 is a masterwork. Saw him live the two times he came to Dublin way back then. Did the whole 'Johnny the fox' turntable/rapping routine and all, brilliant.

Beauty and the Beat is stellar!Had no idea he played here. That and Cloudead were key in reuniting my interest in hip hop a while ago

He played first in the Chocolate Bar (formally the Red Box) with Dagha and then the Tivoli, 2005-2006. Both times he basically did the same set (Beauty and the Beat) with some freestyle turntable/rap action, both gigs fairly packed I remember for such an 'underground ' hip hop act. Met him briefly after the Tivoli show and he seemed like a nice bloke. Just small talk. On a side note I met Flavor Flav after a Public Enemy concert once and he was cool until all these girls came over to him, so my brief and pathetic interview with him was over very quickly. Fair enough.

New/recent ep thing from Black Thought just came to my attention ("Streams of Thought Pt. 2"). Real good.

Have Versatile been watching Behemoth videos?

That's fairly different from their other videos alright! Some production though.

I don't know much about Irish hip hop, but this tune from This Side Up is pretty cool

If we're talking about Irish stuff gonna throw in a quick plug for Nealo - aka Nelly who used to sing for the hardcore band Frustration. Fairly mellow stuff, might be of interest to some here

Been listening to a fair bit of Earl Sweatshirt recently. I'd be mostly into older hip hop, but he's one of the new lot of artists that is doing it for me.

Edan and Homeboy Sandman playing the Sugar Club, February 2019, don't miss out, Edan puts on a great show. I believe RA the Rugged Man plays Dublin this week, amazing rapper, one of the best.

Quasimoto: The Unseen (1999?/2000?)

This álbum remains one of my favourite 'go to' rap albums, as silly and bizarre as it is, never boring though.

Group Home: Livin Proof (1995)

DJ Premier production, hard as nails.

My mate Andrew who some might know from a bunch of heavier bands he's been in over the years (Intensive Care currently, Column of Heaven/Endless Blockade/Shank before that) has turned his hand to producing under the name Wolfagram and has a ton of shit in the works - here's a tune he just put out during the summer

Been listening to a bunch of Westside Gunn, The Opioid Era and Czarface of late.

Oh, and SONS PHONETIC - Waterford hiphop no less. Up the Deise.
