Modern news has always been like this in times of war. Look at US and UK media treatment of Russia before, during, and very quickly after WWII. Stalin went from tyrant to hero and back to tyrant in almost the blink of an eye.

Putin was getting it all ways from the media long before a shot was fired in this current conflict.

I'm familiar with the glorification and demonisation of Stalin and USSR, and of course, you are correct. The intensity of the propaganda and the total dearth of quality, courageous journalism is something new. Part of the blame lies with us all having little super computers in our pockets of course, but Ukraine is at war with Russia. Why does the rest of the world have to have its news replaced with pathetic, transparent propaganda and censorship of what websites we can look at? Tax payer funded RTE (with more ads than a free YouTube account) extolling the virtues of our little country with no tanks, fighter aircraft and enough ammunition for about a week joining NATO and making ourselves legitimate targets in future conflicts over a far away conflict in a country that before Feb 24 this year, nobody gave a shit or knew the first thing about? How much more intense do you want than a two hour film (and it wasn't the only one) extolling the virtues of Stalin because he'd just become an ally? And if you think journalism hasn't always been biased, then it's more likely because you, because all of us were less worldly wise in the past. There's an almost by-definition conservative bias towards believing everything was better in the past. It goes hand in hand with the conservative bias towards believing that improvement needs to be a return to some paradise lost. I don't buy it.

You're right to an extent about the news, I guess it wasn't coming from us at all hours and from all angles. My fascination and subsequent sympathy with the Serbs stemmed from me asking my auld fella why John Finnerty and pals kept saying only the Bosnian Serbs were up to no good, or words to that effect. Can't mind what he said but even 25 years + ago, they were a gang of shillers.

The thing about news is that someone somewhere has to decide what to tell you is news and which parts to leave out.  There are many Irish stories of interest that don't involve Vogue Williams, for example. It serves its purpose in setting the desired agenda and I doubt it has ever been any different.

Fair point about the hearkening back to the past thing, which is likely connected to age as much as anything, because it's easy think things were less fucked when we were kids and it didn't apply to us, or we had more immediate concerns which were mostly concentrated in our mickeys.

Absolutely right, I've always thought and said this to people, it's what they're not saying is where the key is. like 'round the clock coverage of 'Putin's invasion of Ukraine' meanwhile a media blackout on Mohammad Bin Salman and his coalition bombing Yemen back to the stone age. The WHO global pandemic treaty for instance, zero mention of it on RTE that I've seen, and I've been keeping my eye out for it. In fact it hasn't even been mentioned in the Dail other than one question from Willy O'Dee to that cunt Mehole Martin where he asked if legal advise has been sought on the matter, given that they are going to sign away the constitutional rights of the Irish people. Mehole replied that he didn't know and changed the subject. this wasn't reported on the news needless to say ,in keeping with the total media blackout on the subject as a whole.
