I agree, he (or his manager) should have gone into Peter Grant mode and said to the promoter you can have 10% of 100% or 100% of fuck all, or something like that

It's simple enough that a fella wouldn't want the support act to turn the gig into a political event. Just let people enjoy the awful tunes without the politics.

Sheeran has to be the dumbest lad going if he didn't expect Macklemore to do what he did (i.e. make what, in 2026, is an extremely banal pro-Palestine statement): the chap's biggest singles of the last three years are literally called Hind's Hall and Hind's Hall 2, after Hind Rajab. And if Sheeran didn't know it (implausible as that is), his team definitely did. The mystery is that Sheeran invited him to open yet seemingly didn't in any way prepare for the absolutely inevitable backlash. I guess he just is an utterly clueless dope.

Apparently they're mates. My guess is that he knew he'd make some kind of comment, and as you say it would be pretty banal stuff. I think Robert Kraft getting involved was the wild card he probably didn't expect. He's definitely handled the situation since then like a thick cunt though. And yeah agreed, if he was that committed to being non-political then maybe don't bring him on tour in the first place 

Have to admit I'm surprised by the sheer scale of the reaction to it. He handled it badly, but it still seems over the top. The amount of absolutist, binary thinking has been scary to behold. The amount of people being scathing about him trying to 'both sides' it. Like it's genuinely a terrible thing now to try and understand nuance. The modern online discourse of, "you can only agree totally with the hive mind, and you must also do it openly or else you're automatically one of them" is a very dangerous way of thinking.
