Again it's a tough one. I was half thinking about going for multiple gods like the Romans or pagans. Crom Cruach doesn't sound too bad either

He's a good stage actor, but generally speaking in film I'd agree with you; most usually remarkable by being unremarkable. The answer to your direct question is basically The Elephant Man, Alien, and, for our parent's generation, I, Claudius.

Small part but his turn in A Man For All Seasons was excellent. Great in I, Claudius but that was a very stagey production anyway.
