Comus - First Utterance (1970)

I've been getting into a lot of late 60's/early 70's folk music lately but I've never heard anything quite like this, completely over the top, theatrical, weird, dark, slightly gothic folk, a poor comparison might be Tom Waits but whereas his weirdness is based in blues/jazz, these guys were based in folk. Well worth a listen.

If you like the early 70's folk stuff check out 'All on the First Day' by Tony, Caro and John. Very simple but catchy!

Anyone into hip hop the Armand Hammer album from last year, Haram, is class. Pretty sure I posted Billy Woods in here at some stage. New Earl Sweatshirt is great as well.

Yeah class album, need to give it more listens though. That whole crowd are so prolific it's hard to keep up with all of the quality.

This may interest yourself if you're into BW and Earl...check out Mach Homy's album 'Pray for Haiti'. I think he's released about 3 albums in the last year, but that's the one I heard after seeing it in some best of list.

Nice one. Will give that a lash. Fuckin 4 albums last year and one already this year. Makes me sceptical.

Haven't listened to that Comus album in years. Good call!

Ha! Yeah to be fair that sounds like he has no quality control over his output. But the album I mentioned is a good listen. So take it from there I suppose.

Yeah - you suggested "Hiding Places" last year. I'm a big fan of it ever since - one of the best hip-hop records that I heard in a long time. And also you mentioned Armand Hammer - good stuff too.

Someone recommended Woods' collab with Moor Mother as well - that is also fuckin' daycent.

Class, I've been meaning to listen to this album for years now and just never did. Have it on here now making coffee and it's great. Have heard at least 3 references that would become Opeth song titles or lyrics.

Dunno if you came across this one on your 70s folk digging, but it's another one Michael Akerfeldt has mentioned. Way ahead of its time, brilliant album:

Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms (1970)

Fotheringay (1970)

Crap name, worse cover but a great album! Guess it could be described as a Fairport Convention spin off! Sandy Denny's vocals are great as is some of the guitar work. First track is brilliant!

Sandy Denny, yes indeed, what a singer. I've put that album on 'saved' as I've only ever heard The Ballad of Ned Kelly...

Keeping the female vibe going...

I threw this on earlier. Good stuff!

Don't really have anywhere else to put this. Might seem gimmicky at first, but tis a mighty fine rendition:

I might have mentioned this record before - can't remember. Either way - for the day that's in it tomorrow, you could do a lot worse than listen to this.

Was introduced to it last year and it is just... phenomenal.

Iron Mountain - "Unum" (2016)

I remember loving a first track they released some years ago, but nothing else was available at the time. Will definitely check this out, nice one.

Wasn't that the name of a legendary Irish metal festival?

Anyway, I'm on a strong NIN buzz the last couple of weeks (well it never goes away) but I've only recently got round to thinking The Slip is unfairly maligned. Far better than Year Zero or Hesitation Marks, so I'm recommending that one.

Here's an example

I think the album was hampered by being a free release and doesn't seem to be considered proper by the fan base but they're mostly gimps anyway going by the forum

Shame - Songs of Praise (2018)

Only discovered this recently. Not hugely inventive but they are clearly indebted to the likes of Gang of Four, The Fall and Fugazi. Really enjoying it.
