Most musicians go through this, forming your first few bands and then finding something that fits. Plus Fontaines were formed in college he was in his late teens/early twenties at most, quite young still and then to go to the success they've had.

I agree with your point on the first album, a lot of the audience did seem on the older side. They got a bit of an image revamp around Skinty Fia, plus post covid the audience did seem a bit younger
