I won't claim to be an expert on trad music, just not something I was exposed to much as a child, but just judging from seeing stuff on social media there seems be loads of what I'd call 'lad trad' bands popping up seemingly out of nowhere, playing huge venues, doing US tours etc. Fair play to them  but it does make you wonder about how authentic the whole thing is, some of them seem kind of bandwagony, but that's what the young hipstery Irish people are into really - phibsboro, bohs, fontaines DC and pizza, workmans, CMAT, Paul Mescal, oversized leather jackets and mullets etc.

Surely none of ye think that the existence of bands playing trad predominantly for the benefit of tourists, or almost exclusively on the foreign live circuit, is a recent thing!?

No of course not, but as Idj said the whole lad trad thing is certainly a phenomenon thats gaining prominence, and thats partially what im whinging about. And I love complaining, so here I am!

There are a few obvious real deal acts and then seems to be a load of acts that are to me what Idj described. Lankum opened the door and much of what followed isn't of any interest to me. Will always listen to real trad over 99% of them.
