Ah shite. Hard to beat that monolith line up.

Metal gigs in the North West are rare enough. Monolith looks good but logistics will bring me to Whiplash!

Sligo Whiplash Metalfest (2005-2024)

All the best with it boys but have to be honest that's a shocking line up. All tributes? Fuck that. Off to Cork for me.

Yeah,  absolute waste of time really.

I'm sure it'll pull local punters just can't see it appealing to anyone beyond that.

We understand your comments...But this year we need to get people back to Whiplash...Like it or not tributes bring people back in the door (Especially locals)

We need to build funds in order to put a variety of Irish bands on.....(We always look after the bands!)

Hopefully in future years we can put bands on that you might like & will travel to see...

This is about supporting Whiplash with a view to the future & making it sustainable.

Whiplash was always good craic, without breaking the bank & we hope to continue that this year for those that do wish to come...

Surely there's a few Irish bands, up and coming or whatever, who would play for beers?
For coverage at least, no?

There's Irish bands that will play for less than the price of a tribute band to be fair.  Understandably it will bring people in but it would be a safe bet that half of these lads would go to a metal gig regardless of who is on, if there's not a lot of activity in that neck of the woods anyway.

Then again I know fuck all about running a gig in Sligo, maybe six tribute bands is what people there would like to see?  Personally I'd rather pay a tenner one night and just see Hedfuzy plus two other original acts instead, but I'm spoiled here so I don't know.

Edit:  Just saw the bit about making it sustainable.  Surely if it's all local tribute fans this year, they won't go next year because it will be original acts anyway?

I'm baffled by the logic myself. I'm sure the place will be rammed for Abuse Your Illusion etc but is it not a short sighted strategy? People who hit the tribute circuit by and large won't hit the bill if it's an original lineup and the ticket cost is > €20

Would certainly think original bands would cost a lot less to put on then the list of tributes mentioned. Different target audience too... Plenty of people who are happy to drink a few pints and sing along to a tribute's rendition of Master of puppets have zero interest in local acts, and vice versa. Templemore metalfest always tried to strike a balance between a couple of cover bands and more original bands, gets a decent draw from both the casual punters and those interested in local bands. Always thought it was a good way for a more rural fest to operate.

All the same I wish you all the best with it, fair play for stepping up and making something happen
