If it mainly included Irish bands, perhaps along similar lines as Monsters of Rot a few years ago, it could be worth a look. But a weekend of tribute bands sounds abysmal to me.

To echo previous comments, I would have thought a line up of local bands etc would be easier on the funds than tributes.

In saying that though, if it takes off, best of luck with it.

Appreciate the feedback & understand you are all disappointed with the line-up this year.

At the same time I hope you each appreciate we are the ones getting off our asses & trying to organising 2 nights of live music in the north west!!

If successful this year, then hopefully we can showcase other bands next year!.

'Irish bands only festival' would need funds before starting & is highly risky so we won't be doing that this year.

Best of luck with it lads. Hope it goes well for ye.
I make big poos.

Some harsh comments here. I'll be making the trip from Drogheda for it this year. Granded it's not the ideal line up but the lads who organise it put a hell of alot of effort into it & overal the weekend is always great craic. I've been over to 2 or 3 previous Whiplashes where they have been tribute &/or original acts. Last one had Onslaught headlining so you can see the direction they are looking to take it. One of the best bunch of lads you could meet organising this plus Sligo is a super spot & you'll be well looked after if you go!

The comments aren't harsh and the lads accepted the feedback, where's the problem?

It's fair to say that when Whiplash was announced most people thought Irish bands and maybe an Onslaught type band or two.  Great that you're choosing to go but as has been stated earlier by and large the crowd will be locals. Fact.

Why would people outside Sligo make the journey when they can see tributes any night of the week anywhere else. Dublin, just go to fibbers 🤫

All that plus the Monolith festival in Cork on the same day- Rotting Christ Desecration, some cool Irish bands, I know where I'll be.

Yeah, don't want to be piling on the negativity here but honestly don't see the logic in an all-tribute band line-up. Will folk really put in the extra effort to go see some tribute bands when Monolith is on in Cork?

Personally, I feel it'd have been more cost effective to have one, or maybe 2 tributes per night. How many extra people are realistically going to go cos it's all tributes? I reckon you'd get the same numbers through the door (more or less) with fewer tribute acts, cos of the usual type that attend these type of gigs, but have saved money by filling the rest of the bill with local bands.

I'll also reiterate that it's still good to see other fest-type things pop up and hope it goes well enough that it can become an annual thing.

Didn't the original Whiplash die a death because the organisers were divided on having tributes vs. original bands? I recall the same year Abbadon Incarnate played a Slipknot tribute headlined.

The timing of this isn't great - as already noted, you have Monolith on in Cork and I think having a Metallica tribute headline it a few weeks after the real deal playing Ireland is a bad idea.

I get that the north west isn't a hot bed of metal, but there's only so many tribute acts you can stomach. Plus, do ye not get a bit bored of having the same tributes in? This lineup is basically the last few bands that were in town over a few years rolled into one weekend.

"For metalheads by metalheads", but not if you care for original music and are just dying to hear the same songs rattled off in the pub for the millionth time.

Genuinely, the best of luck with it and I hope ye can gain traction and grow, but from my own perspective it holds almost no appeal (bar seeing Headfuzzy).

As an organiser from the first one in 2005, Whiplash originally died off for a combination of reasons but
ultimately funds dried up & attendance dwindled in 2008, making it unsustainable at that time.

I don't wish to have a debate with specific members here and people have made the point they don't like tributes.

Tribute acts pull a crowd & we need to have a crowd to make it a success.

In order to get a venue to support us, we first need to prove to them that
we can organise,
we can promote,
we can fill the venue & show in turn they can do well from bar receipts.

That in turn will allow us venture into expanding the line up to include more original bands.

Sligo is not Dublin/Limerick or Cork. We don't get the same exposure & you don't get metal played here every weekend.. If you don't want to come, that's ok too.We can't please everyone all of the time.
Isn't it actually great you have a choice where to go, at both ends of the country!

As a concert goer for over 30 years & having ran 4 years of successful whiplash's, I do know first-hand how hard it is to organise & run these events.

People have the choice of attending Sligo Whiplash & I would hope some members here would attend & enjoy the weekend of music that is being put on. Not just the music but the overall craic on the long weekend.

You are entitled to your opinions & I take on board your critics.
The metal community to me was always a place of inclusion but maybe that is no longer the case.

This year, we hope people come & enjoy the excellent tributes especially if they have never had the chance to see any of the real bands live.
