Quote from: Carnage on June 26, 2024, 11:37:24 PMIf it had the production of The Ethereal Mirror it'd be immense, but it's a bit thin in comparison and that snare sounds shite. I could do without the "Huggy Bear, oh yeah!" interlude in Utopian Blaster too.

I know the band hated the sound on TEM but it sounds perfect to me, heavy as balls. Ashes You Leave could be on Forest, or the Soul Sacrifice EP at least.

Ashes You Leave may well be the moat underrated Cathedral tune

My favourite song of theirs, and that main riff is just fantastic:

THE riff:

When I saw Whitesnake at Graspop back in 2006 or 2007 they opened with Burn, was class. Great show all round. Many contenders for greatest Deep Purple riff though, hard to know where to even start but this one's just come to mind so, why not, first riff after the already perfect intro:

Also, every riff in surely DT's finest attempt to out-Rush Rush:

Another absolute riff-fest all the way through here, yet with a very clear riff climax sliding in fashionably late at 4:33:
[Previews not showing up for this or the next one for some reason: Tribulation - Wanderer In The Outer Darkness from Formulas of Death]
https://youtu.be/14xl5BAEs94?si=CSRKdONvtLomejCt

And from fashionably late to turning up in a bad place and tripping balls. Can't find all the individual tracks on YT, but take the one that starts around 1:50 on track 1 for starters:
[Howls of Ebb - Imperial Prophets from Vigils of the 3rd Eye]
https://youtu.be/heHoXVKPMmE?si=mVedBonMgqzGBokz

Finally, some meat and potatoes to end on. The bridge riff introduced from 2:18 onward:

Oh, which reminds me of a stone cold fucking classic:

Better stop there before I fall fully into the cauldron of killer riffs in true metal  :abbath:

Had "The Garden of Unearthly Delights" on there a few weeks ago for the first time in moons (sadly the scratch 'n' sniff disc is no longer sniffy), and this is such a great unga-bunga caveman metal riff/tune.

This is a belter too

I'll just leave this here

Hang on, fucking hell, I'm a dope. And everyone else is a dope too, how the FUCK have we missed the best riff in history?

Another Ian/Benante banger

The main riff just stomps on your chest like a mammoth would do.

This song consists of main riffs.

And don't get me started on the older CC material. They are supposed to be meat and potatoes death metal. Its the kind of meat and potatoes your mommy serves you for Sunday dinner, when you actually bother to visit Her once in a blue moon, mister big shot "I only listen to avant-garde bisexual - jazz - core".

Another meat and potatoes band, which slays consistently, very often reaching brilliance. Fecking "Warschau". Fecking "Plague Angel" album in general. Fecking "Werwolf".

Have to say, thoroughly enjoyed those two CC tracks, especially From Skin to Liquid! I really don't know that much at all past the first three or four albums, they just slipped off my radar at some point and I never spent any time with later releases. Will be rectifying that starting with Gallery of Suicides I think.

One to add: have always loved Believer's riffing style, so there's loads of good ones in here, but 1:30 is a classic for me. Then at 2:25 a proper "one of your five-a-day" sustenance metal riffs  and back into the previous one for a killer double solo  :abbath:

Al liked Rigor Mortis so much he made the riff for Thieves like one of theirs and he ended up bringing Mike Scaccia aboard on Psalm 69.

Several absolute crackers in this one.

And lets not forget Edward.

And Ace.
