The Manic Street Preachers' "Gold Against The Soul" has some massive riffs on it and is bookended by two monsters.

As mentioned elsewhere - this is an underrated gem of a record and Bradfield is criminally underrated as a guitar player.

It occurred to me earlier that Sepultura mentions in this were thin on the ground but glad to see this one got a mention.

While they have a ridiculous amount of heavier and more crushing riffs, the first time I heard this Mastodon track I remember thinking 'these lads are taking the absolute piss', the balls to build up to this point in the song, especially after the epic "I was standing at the edge of the world, and I still can't see it" crescendo...to then break out basically a funk rock riff just for the sheer fun of it.

Two enormous pools of riffs opened up there with Nevermore and Mastodon!

Is there a single riff on Leviathan that isn't a stomping classic, for example? Plenty of heavy and crushing great ones, as you say ldj, but it's their lick-riffing I think I love the most, like this opener (song also contains a couple of quality crushers too  ):

Ooooh, Mastodon's best song, and one of the best metal songs of this century, full stop.

I was just thinking of getting the aul 'Speed Kills' comps back in the day. Total game changer for me, discovered so many bands and albums through those.

This one, really simple riffs but totally crushing -

The classic chugga-chugga widdle widdle thrash riff -

I have a riff stuck in my head and I can't place it. I think it's a Bolt Thrower one but I can't track it down.

Edit: It finally came to me. That opening/verse riff is deadly:

Apologies if it's already been posted, getting riff overload from this thread.

Good call! Probably my favourite Bolt Thrower album overall.

One of mine anyway, it was my introduction to them.

The riff from World Eater is probably my favourite Bolt Thrower riff.

Funny though, I chose it because personally it wouldn't even be my choice for best song on that album... yet has amazing and diverse riffage throughout.

Still loads of tracks in this discussion I haven't gotten round to yet. Great thread!  :abbath:

The first four Mastodon records really are an embarrassment of riches (riff-ches?!)
