First time seeing this too. That Bin Laden compound scene will stay with me for a while, really good stuff.

Any other director and it would have come across as 'Murica fuck yeah but Bigelow is an absolute genius when it comes to tension.

Just watched it

What a story

So funny and tough to watch at times
I had tears of laughter, sadness and joy throughout

Great show fucking drugs in your pussy!

Might be one for the controversial opinions thread, but I just do not think Return of the King is that good. I watched it there about a week ago, and whereas I really like the first two, there's something about this one that just doesn't hit the mark for me. It certainly has its moments, but often I found myself bored or my attention wandering. There's something about the whole,'bad-CGI ghosts appear and instantly win the battle' part that rubs me the wrong way too. Bad CGI in terms of the way they swarm the enemies. How one-dimensional and moronic Denethor is makes every scene with him unbearable. I also think the ham level in this one in general is ramped up way beyond the first two. It swept the Oscars, but it's hard not to feel there was a little bit of legacy recognition in those choices to also recognize the first two.

Anyways, I could probably complain more and I know lots of people absolutely love it, but for me it's the Return of the Jedi of the trilogy.
(Disclaimer: I know people love RotJ too, but the general view is that it was a step down from the first two).

All else aside, it's definitely better than Return of the Jedi. The perfect surprise of the opening scene alone was worth the entry. Has definite flaws, but excellent despite them.

Its weaker than The Two Towers, which is weaker than Fellowship, but it's still an 8 or 9 out of 10 for me. The extended editions get a watch once a year and I never grow tired of them.

I was never mad about the books but ive gone more into the lore around Middle Earth in the last year or so (there's a decent podcast Lore of the Rings which is handy) and even knowing some extra little bits it gives the movies a little extra dimension.

Long story short, greatest trilogy every put to film. Not willing to entertain any argument against it

Yeah, I'll give the extended versions a go about every year or two myself. Can't actually watch the regular ones now, the extended tie things together so much better

Watched a French one last night called With A Friend Like Harry. Thought it was great. The French know how to make a fucked up film.

Had never seen Velvet Goldmine, now I have. Not very good. Feels like a student movie for a lot of it, though the original tunes aren't too bad.

Not sure I've ever watched Return of the King after being bored stiff by it in the cinema. Might be time to have another look and keep a box of Kleenex handy in case I get stiff again. Can't miss any opportunity at my age...

Huge Roxy Music fan, the version of "2HB" on th soundtrack is possibly superior to the original (which is already incredible). But yeah, the film is pretty poor.

Saw "The Bride" yesterday. Ohhh boy. Such a fucking mess of a film. Weirdly, I still enjoyed it. No spoilers, but there are two characters/plotlines the film absolutely did not need (if you've seen it, the opening conceit is one, and an absolute fucking cringe of an idea)

Train Dreams is excellent.

I watched the Oscars last night. Good god it is such a weird, stiff, awkward, corny show.

Fair play to One Battle After Another for being the success story of the night.

Not sure whether Sinners is a big winner or not. It got 4, but from 16 nominations, though it did get one of the big 4 with the best actor win. I rewatched it after the show and I'm a bit surprised at 16 noms. It was a good film, but most Oscar nominations ever?

No real drama or controversy this year either. Possibly Javier Bardem saying Free Palestine as the Oscar folks hate that kind of stuff, but all in all a bit of a snooze-fest.

Cool that Jessie Buckley took home the best actress award for Ireland.

Would've def given best picture to Bugonia over One Battle and enjoyed Sinners but wouldn't have thought it was Oscar worthy in any capacity.

Haven't seen Hamnet but I'm a fan of Jessie Buckley so happy for her.

As long as best film didn't go to F1, which it obviously wasn't going to, I was happy for it to go to any of the others, even if OBAA wouldn't have been my personal pick.
