As part of my early/mid 2000s nostalgia trip mentioned in the listening thread, I watched a few movies from the era too.

Employee of the Month
Pretty much total shit. It has its moments; Dax Shepherd is pretty funny in it. Overall though it's the kind of contrived, vapid, made to make a quick buck type of movie imaginable. And whatever happened to Dane Cook? That was a 5mins of fame even shorter than Sam Worthington's.  2000s Jessica Simpson though...holy fuck.

Waiting...
And more Dane Cook, funnily enough, albeit a small role. This was a comfort movie for me at one point and is still hilarious. Another film where Ryan Reynolds plays himself, though he's tolerable here and often funny. Very mid 2000s humour, IE edgy and funny in a way you wouldn't get today. Take a look at the batwing, bitch.

At least he has Avatar to fall back on every few years. Keeps him fed and clothed.

The Nice Guys

Thought it was ok. Was genuinely funny at times, and it's good to see Ryan Gosling play a comedic role as he's so serious and emotionless all the time I thought he was on the spectrum. His rapport with Russell Crowe is really good too. I think the only drawback is the comedy is a bit hit and miss, and often not as funny as it thinks it is. The two of them plus the child actor lead were all great though and it would have been cool to see them in a sequel.

Every now and again Shane Black delivers the goods. Must actually re watch that as

Then he does The Predator.
And goes back to Hollywood jail (and probably makes decent money doing uncredited rewrites for Robert Downey Jnr).

really good Shane Black one. This and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are great. It would be cool to have a sequel. It could be a modern Lethal weapon series

Watched 2 films by a director called Gerard Johnson. Hyena and Muscle.
Both very good but Muscle was particularly great I thought. When I saw Craig Fairbass was in it I was initially put off but he's actually very good. Quite a bleak film but funny at the same time and halfway through there is a shocking scene which I wasn't expecting.
I see he has a new one called Odyssey out which I'm looking forward to watching.

Bit of a 90s Sci-fi buzz this week. Watched Stargate and The 5th Element. Both very enjoyable and quite fun. I think Stargate has aged better though.

Yeah! Watched Stargate again recently and still enjoyed it.
Got stuck into S1 of the series too, as it popped up on Netflix last week.

I wore my Absolute Elsewhere t-shirt out to a (Nirvana tribute) gig Christmas 2024. Two separate fellas came up to me gushing about how good Stargate was.

I was pretty confused until I remembered it has "Open The Stargate" on the back  The lads hadn't heard of Blood Incantation, in fairness I've never seen Stargate

Step aide Bone Church, Psycho Killer is here to take the "worst horror film of the year so far" crown. Absolutely piss poor, bar the fact that Venom are on the soundtrack (alas, so are Dark Funeral). Genuinely feels like it was written by a 12 year old.

Just got around to A House Of Dynamite, really liked that one. The tension was unbearable at times. A good call on the ending, it suited it perfectly. Not sure about Idris Obama though.

I re-watched The Royal Tenenbaums over the weekend. Nice little flick.

There Will Be Blood

I enjoyed it, but I seem to have a thing with Paul Thomas Anderson films where I like them but never love them. Daniel Day Lewis simultaneously has a really ham accent, but also an amazing performance in general in this. I loved the ending.

Love it. Hackman's performance is quality.

Yeah, he's great in it.
