Lost, obscure or under appreciated....

Stillborn [SWE] - Necrospirituals (1989)

https://youtu.be/fu4hlkAv8Ic

Crimson Relic [US] - Purgatorys Reign (1996)

https://youtu.be/rhXgCQuE3zw

Maple Cross [FIN]- The Eight Day of Creation (1991)

https://youtu.be/DuGkd6IzsFI

Mandator [NL] - Initial Velocity (1988)

https://youtu.be/DHq94WVUI5M

Musically that Stillborn song is ordinary enough but the Saruman vocals are so cool they take it up several notches.

Symbyosis - On The Wings of Phoenix (2005)

A sprawling double-album of melodic and mildly technical death from France.

Aaaagh! Papyrus!

Twisted Into Form - Then Comes Affliction to Awake The Dreamer

A technical metal gem from members of Spiral Architect. Very similar in style to the SA album, but a bit more straightforward and hook driven. At times it sounds like Death's Human with clean vocals.

Deathrow - Deception Ignored

In an also ran generic Teutonic thrash career these guys created a genuine technical thrash masterpiece. There's a riff or two in there that Vektor have been cheeky with.

Comecon - Megatrends in Brutality

Not so much a lost gem, but a lost album for sure.
A Swedish DM studio act with that released three albums with a different known singer on each. LG Petrov did this one while he was kicked out of Entombed. The second album has Martin Van Drunen, and the lad from Morgoth on the last. Not reinventing the wheel, but the Petrov one has its moments.

Deathrow are a killer band.

Another forgotten band beginning with D, Deathwish - killer thrash from the UK.  Two albums, which I both love.

The Nefilim - Zoon

Fields of The Nephilim frontman's dip into metal. There's kind of a Ministry meets goth feel to it. Its hasn't aged the best there's a few great tracks.

Oh Wow! I'd completely forgotten about this one. Was given a copy by co-worker in the late 90's. Remember finding it difficult to get into back then. Weird hearing the Ministry, White Zombie and even Slayery influences layered on the Fields of the Nephilim sound.

Exorcist - Nightmare Theatre was an album I played to death back in the day, only ever met one other person who had/liked it, features Virgin Steele members.

Funnily enough this and the second one "Converging Conspiracies" has just been reissued. Story is it was a project by two dudes from a hardcore band called The Krixhjalters, and none of the drummers listed on the albums were real, it was all programmed. I think i liked that first one when I was about 15 but then again I had no taste when I was 15  ;D , listening to it now it hasn't aged well.

LSD - The Silent Majority

If a slightly heavier version of Dr. Feelgood-era Motley Crue being fronted by a hobo sounds like your cup of tea then you owe it to yourself to discover this gem. Schtick aside, it's a very decent collection of catchy early-90's LA rock with the career-killing decision made to go with the image of a homeless guy as the frontman. Stanley had some fantastic moves, it must be said, and the legendary smell of piss added a thick layer of authenticity. I picked this up for £1 in Freak-Out back in the day, drawn in by the pictures of the three poodle-haired lads with a hobo and the premise that you couldn't go wrong for a quid and so it proved.

Saw mention of It Is I elswhere who I'd totally forgotten about, sludgy industrial heft from a former Asbestos Death/Noothgrush member from the early 90s

That in turn reminded me of the almighty EISENVATER who were plowing a similar but more refined furrow. Seriously fucking underrated band, way ahead of their time. First album is I think from 91 and really unique and forward looking for the time - it's like a mid point between "Streetcleaner", Crowbar's heaviest moments with something akin to what Today Is The Day would do on their Relapse albums. Long overdue a rediscovery.

Sure while I'm at it talking about bands ahead of their time, let's talk about MINDROT's "Dawning". Peers of Fear Factory back in the early 90s, but far better, mixing death metal heft, gothy elements, and Neurosis style tribal/industrial intensity

Atrocity "Todessensucht"
Absolute masterpiece that again suffered from Roadrunner picking them up and dropping them almost instantly. A more complex, morbid sounding Euro take on the Florida stuff that picks up nicely from "Hallucinations" and stands up remarkably well two decades later. Shame they turned into such an abomination after this. If you've never heard it or only know their awful goth metal shite, set aside a half hour or so, grab the headphones and get stuck into this

I had a tape of this in my first car and listened to it a lot. It does stand up on listening to it again. I must give Hallucinations a spin as well while I'm at it

That Mindrot is a brilliant album, all of their stuff is right and good. One i had out at the weekend again

Great call on Todessehnsucht, spent many a teen evening with that one, was nothing really like it at the time, twisted, dark ,eery, just the right amount of technical fretboard fuckery  and that cold German harshness underpinning it all, fucking brilliant album, absolute travesty the muck they began pedalling soon after.
