Seen that myself, it looked class with that sliver of a crescent moon 🌙

I'm in wetherspoons here in Waterford and it feels like the old days. Drink cheap as shit and the place is packed. Buzzing. As soulless as it is, the cheap pints is enough to fill it up.

If this takes off, the Irish pub is fucked

2.45 a pint. All the drink is ridiculously cheap as is the food. Full Irish for 7 quid and there's loads on it

The absolute dregs of society go in there. The only good thing about it is that it takes the scum out of all the other city centre places.

Ah I dunno man. I mean I did say it was soulless in itself other than the cheap drink but when everyone in there can drink 8 pints of some 6% shit for 20 euro and have 40 cent change as well as the ability to eat an extensive menu of soakage for peanuts at the same time as the electric bill is gone through the roof along with the diesel and the food well then I feel like it's a fantastic thing regardless of the few shitehawks. The shitehawks always get weeded out after the first few months in any new place anyway so I reckon all those dregs of society will be back looking for a new home before long.

I also see what's so evil about the potential for the future of this but fuck I'm not paying 6 quid a pint and getting my shit pushed in for a bit of food along with it when I can have this instead.

Honestly it felt like the 90s with the place full of pints and food and shit decor and all and even kids running around in there.

I loved it

2.45 a pint!! Is that for beer, own brand I guess. That's great value.
I went out the other week, midweek for a match(off next day). Shit game 5 pints , 27.50euro. I felt violated, as I live rural. :'(

Yeah it's some stuff I never heard of but it was lovely. They were pulling the pints coronation Street style and there's a massive massive choice of poison but the brands can be gotten too, maybe at 3.50 each. You can also taste all of the beers before committing to any of them which is class. In a way I don't want this to take off because it'll be the Lidl of pubs but I really hope it puts manners on the LVA for once and maybe they might rethink their strategy of squeezing the fuck out of me for fuck all pints and go with a strategy of making me actually want to go there, because if the local could even somewhat compete I'd still choose there.

I'll give an example: Jaeger bomb in there for 3.50 but it's nearly 8 quid in the local here so yknow as much as I don't want the local to die, fuck em as well for their choice of strategy. The Irish pubs react to the lack of footfall by upping the prices for the few poor cunts who do still go there rather than dropping the price and simply selling more pints by getting more heads in the door so yeah fuck em and whatever excuse they are using to do this to the punter. It has been their strategy for years the gouging fucks

Edit: also by dropping the price a bit and getting more in the door it also makes it more attractive to people walking past and hearing the craic therein rather than sticking the head in and there's 3 lads cradling their pints because drinking them too fast makes it too pricey.

The LVA and their members deserve this wholeheartedly. Me oul lad ran a pub and he always said the LVA were only a crowd of wankers and he was fuckin right

Agree completely with all of the above. Was over In Galway couple of weeks back, everywhere was dead and still charging 6.50 a pint. Oul lads mid afternoon cradling pints for an hour.
Agree with getting the numbers in. Only I wanted to see said match I would not have bothered, looked in the window beforehand and thought this looks grim.
Wetherspoons imo is like the Netflix model.
Make it cheap to get them in the door, and once they are in they will stay.
Good luck to them.

Like seriously, if the price of pints was equivalent to drinking at home the pints would win every time

Edit: to the LVA: please don't interpret that as lobbying harder than ever for more expensive drink at home; make it more attractive to go to the pub

While I understand the need to push back on ever increasing prices, I do fear what a race to the bottom will result in - the cultural homogeneity of our society, every city starts to look the same, Starbucks, Mcdonalds, Premier Inn and every other bland corporate glass and steel monoliths oozing out uniformity that you can think of.

To rejig Henry Fords quote - "Any customer can go into any pub that he wants, so long as it is Wetherspoons.".

Krispy Kreme about to open in Galway, with a Wetherspoons in the works too. A town that had a lot of character is losing it bit by bit, not to mention becoming dangerous to wander around by night. I'll have a look in the pub out of curiosity but I prefer a quiet boozer to spend a few hours in, so it wouldn't have any appeal for me.

I agree with that completely and I'm hoping the gouging fucks that we currently have can see it coming and do something about it. It's not lost on me at all but I'm so sick of getting ripped off in this country from every angle that I welcome the shake up and hope the locals are shitting in their solid gold pants with their fucking rip off bar menus and robbing bastard drink prices

Teasing my cat across the floor with a laser pointer...

Really? I've always found Galway safe enough - definitely safer than Cork, Limerick or Dublin anyway.
