Savage.  Don't quite know how to pin this but it is sort of doom, heavy on synth, atmospheric but bleak and cruel.  Takes a few songs to get into it but this is lethal.

Armored Saint - March Of The Saint 9/10
Been listening to a lot of Vicious Rumors lately and from there it's an almost signposted path to Armored Saint and their rather spiffing 1984 debut which brought together so much of what's great about Heavy/Speed/Power and even Hair Metal.

Vicious Rumors - Welcome To The Ball 8.5/10
A few holes in the VR discography here much to my chagrain but this is the pick of those I have. 'Abandoned' is some opener.

Immolation - Descent 8/10
Hmm.The bar is of course ridiculously high in light of their history but I somehow haven't quite succumbed to Immo's all conquering DM majesty this time around. And it's still fucking awesome. A measure of their enduring quality but I'm still leaning towards (many) previous efforts.

Hobb's Angel of Death 7.5/10
Cult Australian thrash drawing heavily from early Slayer, principally Hell Awaits without ever reaching those heights (depths?).It took years for me to see past their clunky moniker and get this in my collection. Dufus.

Venom - From The Very Depths 7/10
The venomous one(s) may not be as virulently poisonous as in days of yore ,indeed it's all more knucklehead stomp these days than anything truly worthy of the progenitors of extreme Metal but I still get a kick in the hole (with a hob nailed boot) from latter day albums like this one from 2015.

Sinner Rage - Powerstrike 6/10
These Spaniards must have come straight from the eighties in a tardis because this thing almost requires the donning of spandex before hitting play. Suitably then, I picked it up on cassette. Add a couple of points here if you don't mind a lack of darkness or nastiness in your Metal because this is actually very well done.

Phil Venom, as his mates know him, who played bass in Hobbs Angel of Death in the 80s, lives in the same town as me. He was in D666 in the 90s as well, plus a multitude of other bands. I've met him a few times. Funny dude.
