All the talk of Megadeth and past members recently reminded me that this legendary virtuoso once auditioned to replace Marty Friedman, something James himself says he has no recollection of due to memory loss caused by his brain tumour at the time.

Speaking of things oh-so 90s (see Film thread), this album sweats everything alt-90s from every pore!

It does, I mean a lot of it is basic alternative rock riffs as a foundation for Murphy's leads, it's all over the place stylistically but it works, it flows. As an aside I only have a dubbed copy of this and after I listened to it I googled the artwork,....yeah, I think I'm happy enough with the dub !

Nocturnus - The Key

Super thrashy early 90s tech death, had never heard of em before last night. Nice blend of agressive thrash riffs, unhinged solos/fretboard abuse, and goofy 90s sci-fi synth. Generally dont like tech death because its so squeaky clean but this has a nice raw bite to it.

It's a masterpiece.

All-time great record. Seeing them play it in full at Hellfest 2014 was lethal, made only better by Browning introducing every song with "This next sooong, is from THE KEY!!" - the whole set was The Key.

 thats deadly. Yeah Im loving it, on my third listen today while I work. The synths are really making it for me, gives it such an odd feel. Love stumbling on classics Ive never heard of before!

There'll always be something you've never heard, and your time is probably as well spent digging through that as new stuff, I find more and more.

Maybe an obscure reference but I even hear a heap of old shoot em up soundtracks in here, technosoft stuff like elemental master, thunderforce IV etc.

Yep. The rewards always seem bigger and better.

A longtime favourite, the keyboards were such an anomaly at the time (for me anyway) and it took a while to click but it's a mighty album. Thresholds, the follow up, is also decent.

I have the Key t-shirt on right now. As I said in another thread a while back the AD stuff is also great especially the first album. The 2024 album takes a bit of effort to get into. After Death is also worth checking out.

Mindless Sinner: Metal Merchants    CD

The Key is phenomenal. Seems a bit of a forgotten classic in some ways though, you never hear it mentioned with other forward thinking albums like Testimony of the Ancients, Unquestionable Presence, or Human that all came out around the same time

The Key was a rite of passage back in my school days. One fella bought it and then it was copied about 100 times throughout the school.

Seems like I missed out on an integral part of my schooling then  ;D  didnt realise it was so popular a record, better late than never!
