Love it or hate it, 'the black album' is 35 years old today. And if that didn't make you feel old, Leprosy is 38 years old today.

I had Leprosy on last week. Such a good good album...

God 35 years ago. I remember myself and a mate watching TOTP on the Thursday evening in anticipation of the new Metallica song.
Neither of us was enthused for it really.
I wasn't the biggest fan of AJFA either mind, even though it was the first CD I ever bought, they (CDs) were pricey back then.
I never bought the Black Album, but had a copy of it. Can't remember if I've played it anytime in the last 30 years or so, nor if I ever will again...
RTL and MOP are the absolute business though.

Those 2000s plus period Manowar (2000's and beyond) aren't bad, not to be ignored .

I loved them up to and including AJFA, and even though I was quite shocked by the new direction I went along with it and have always liked that album.

I distinctly remember picking it up on tape in the Virgin Megastore in Belfast, along with the 12" of Enter Sandman. I was staying with an uncle at the time amd he told me to stick it on the hi-fi there to see what all the fuss was about. He was most impressed by the Stone Cold Crazy cover (and pointed me to Sheer Heart Attack on his record shelf, so another door was opened there).

I think I'm on my fifth copy of it now, it fell out of favour for a decade or so but I eventually came back to it. Catchy pop metal, not for everyone and considered an insult to the band name by some but fuck it, it's great stuff.

I was already obsessed with Metallica at that point, maybe into them a year or so by then, although it's so hard to gauge at this stage- it may have only been a few months- but they knocked GNR off top spot. I saw Enter Sandman on TOTP and nearly had a heart attack with excitement  I loved The Black Album at the time and still have plenty of time for it today. Might have to throw it in the car tomorrow

It's so well produced too. Over produced many say, and with some legitimacy, but that thick, beefy sound is a thing of beauty. Imagine some of their earlier work with that sound, fucking hell.

Actually, one thing I loved about Metallica back then when they were my gods, was the fact that every album sounded so different. I didn't understand anything about production values or song writing techniques because I was a kid, but my ears detected massive differences in what I'd now call mood or atmosphere from album to album. I didn't realise it had anything to do with the band becoming more skilled, complex songwriters between, for example, Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning. I loved both albums, and took it for granted that a band should always write different sounding songs and albums. I think that's why Metallica always meant more to me than Slayer. Slayer were more extreme, and I liked/loved Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons In The Abyss, but they had a much more rigid style. The differences between songs and albums to me sounded more minuscule by comparison with the differences across Metallica's first five albums, which offered a richer listening experience.

Hated the Black album then, hate it even more now.

Leprosy on the other hand I still love to bits.
