Yeah I just got into it a bit this week, simple straightforward old DM hitting the spot. At least they went back to basics , their experimental stuff was dodgy to say the least.

Conqueror - War Cult Supremacy
Bathory - Twilight of the Gods

Yeah, watched an Order from Chaos interview earlier and he cited them as influences along with Bathory, and in turn OfC were huge for Conqueror so an OfC adjacent evening !

For another link: Steve from Slaughter Lord told me they used to write to Quarthon back in the day and Quorthon would include bones in his letters. Chicken bones probably but they made necklaces out of them to be vltranekrokvlt!

Sure ye could hardly make soup out of them. Cool info!

Quote from: ldj on June 28, 2026, 12:34:02 AMAlrite, controversial opinion, Bruce Dickinson, arguably the GOAT, can't fault him musically... he's nearly got it all...except he's just not cool, is he?

Few beers deep blasting some Maiden bootlegs from the 80s and his between song banter is tragic, "I don't know anything about football but I'm going to spend every song break talking about football to sound working class".

Now Dianno...he was fucking cool. I'll leave the hall.

Brilliant frontman, if not the best but I don't think I've ever really thought of him as 'cool', I've always thought of him as a goofy poshboy, which is part of the charm.

But of an unsung gem From the NWOBHM era, and a good riposte for anyone who dismisses it all as dad rock, this has more of an edge to it than many of its contemporaries, almost proto thrash in its high energy delivery yet always retaining that traditional hard rock style.

Fossilization - Advent of Wounds 8/10
New from the Brazilians and a record that only increases their lurking presence in the putrified pond of underground Death Metal. This is going to make my end of year list I'd imagine, getting better with every spin.

Reversed - Widow Recluse 7.5/10
The Canadians announced themselves in 2018 with this arachnid themed demo that impressed in all its reckless thrashing abandon. Vinyl pick up, love the cover.

Dimmu Borgir - Grand Serpent Rising 7.5/10
Parted way with Dimmu and their overwrought symphonics many freezing moons ago but I picked this up cheap and it's not been fucked out the window at all, there's definitely been a dialling back of the pomp and circumstance, (very) relatively speaking, a little more focus on the riffs and  the meat and bones of the tracks, it's waaay too long of course, nothing new there, it's not Dimmu without the overindulgence but..yeah, so far..I think my window is staying shut.

Cancer - Shadow Gripped 7/10
2018 return that worked quite well as a throwback to their gory days rather than heralding any bright new chapter for the band. Album cover sucks, looks more like a Belphegor effort. Yeah, I think this is scraping a 7 for me these days after initial apathy.

Barbarian - Viperface 6/10
Haven't nabbed this year's release from these Italian troglodytes but I imagine it's not wildly advanced from this clattering, retrograde black thrash ,  like having an army of Orcs and rivetheads  come to smash up all your Dream Theater lps.

I'm a huge NWOBHM fan but that Savage record never really clicked with me for whatever reason, will try again today!

Morbid Angel - Covenant

Had Rapture stuck in my head all day, so had to throw the album on soon as I got a chance  :abbath:

I am also going to have to revisit that Savage record...

Iron Maiden - 7th Son
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Leatherhead - Violent Horror Stories
Einherjer - Far Far North

Devourment - Pious Impiety

Astriferous - Atavistic Unraveling

Watched the Bathory Tribute band there. Pretty good.

Watching Blood Incantation live. Holy moley! I saw them live years ago and thought they were cool but to see how much their stage show has grown along with their music is incredible. I haven't kept up with their albums but maybe I'll grab that new one. They just look and sound like they are from another dimension now. It's amazing to see a truly underground and difficult band become so popular. Fair fucks to them.

Savage - Loose 'N' Lethal (couldn't for the life of me remember it until I stuck the first track on, but yeah a very solid album (maybe runs out of steam towards the end)).
Monolord - Neverending
Warning - Rituals of Shame
Mayhem - Liturgy of Death (I've said this before but I think this is actually a good album, I'm probably in the minority).
Khemmis - Khemmis
Worm - Necropalace (and I love this as well).

The Meads of Asphodel-Damascus Steel
Voivod-Angel Rat
