It was fun at the time, I thought, but that said- I only ever had a loan of it off a friend. Never bought it. I never even recorded it. But as a young lad I liked the filthy, raw (to my tender ears) production on it. Catchy, throwaway stuff, and simply of its time.  Probably the reason I never caved in and bought it was that the artwork was so shit, especially after Chaos AD, whose cover was iconic, if also of its time.

I bought it in my early teens, as it was held in such high esteem by much of the print media of the time as some sort of benchmark record. Loads of my mates loved it too. I remember trying so desperately to like it, being a young teen I couldnt possibly not like an album so heavily praised, I had to fit in with my pals opinions or else I knew nothing right?!

Gave up on it after about a month of painful listening and have heard it maybe once in the subsequent 20 years, 0/10 is right

Roots Bloody Roots is worth 1 point, surely? It's always good craic, live. There are not many albums you can turn off after one song, knowing without any doubt there's nothing left worth hearing, having started with a banger. Fair play to them for that, I suppose?

What about RATAMAHATAMAHATAMAHATA

  Ratamahatamahatamahatamahata is certainly up there. Really laid the template for masterpieces such as Mulambolambolambolamboaqui or whatever the fuck that soulfly tune was  truely visionary stuff.

Soulfly must have arrived just that bit too late for me because they sucked from the start  :-X

Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations

An 11/10 debut, helped to that Tufnelian height by the title 'Sucking My Love'

More seriously, one of the most ground-breaking debuts of all time. The story of DH's mismanagement, etc., is truly a musical tragedy, impossible not to think about when listening to genre-defining banger after genre-defining banger: Lightning to the Nations, The Prince, Sucking My Love, Am I Evil?, It's Electric, Helpless!  :abbath:  :abbath:  :abbath:

Your ignorance of soulfly is honestly, enviable. In case my initial sarcasm wasn't evident, yes they always sucked. All knowledge of their music I possess was gained non-consensually.

I wouldn't be a big fan of Roots even though Attitude, Spit and Dictatorshit are great songs. I saw Soulfly playing it in full twice and it was really enjoyable. Come to think of it Roots Bloody Roots is the one song from the album that I can't stand in the same way that I hate Raining Blood, Walk and Enter Sandman.

I prefer Roots to Chaos AD but the bar is very low with that album.

Spit is great, RBR is awful but I still like it. Not a great album, but compared to the Soulfly album it's fucking Shaft. Did it get praise at the time? I don't remember that.

Chaos AD still has that school days nostalgia vibe to it. And seeing the videos all over MTV at the time, too.

Like most I think, I tried to like Roots but just had to give up that ghost after a while.

Same for Soulfly! It was Max... It can't be shit, surely! But no. It was all total dogshit!

All the music media at the time was 100% behind Max after the split. For years and multiple albums, even. But the joke just got worse.
Sepultura had the opposite! Everyone reviled and ridiculed them after the split. But they built it back up over the years and released some quality music.

If we were to make a MW "dead horse" list, as forums of yore sometimes had, I'd put Roots up top

I think it warrants a routine thrashing, lest we forget.

Nah man, that's a torture to get through as an opener when you know full well how much other riffless abominations are to come. Ok so one of two tracks were bearable, Straighthate being the one to spring to mind but the whole experience...turgid. Anyway sorry for bringing up so many bad memories for folks
