Chaos Invocation-Reaping Season,Bloodshed Beyond 8/10
First pick up from this band, this their third album and I dropped the needle expecting something in the Bestial/War Metal realm but this is a classy and nuanced affair more in line with something like Negative Plane than any of those goat botherers. Always nice to have your preconceptions fucked with.

Venator - Psychodrome 7/10
The Austrians must have one of the best bunch of moustaches in Metal right now but they also have the tunes to match. This second full length, out on Dying Victims naturally, is one of the most nostalgic ,good time Metal albums you'll hear all year. And is it just me or has that singer developed a real Blackie timbre to his voice since last time out?

Death Angel - Killing Season 7/10
Two albums into their 2008 comeback and the boys were a bit all over the place stylistically, their hi-octane thrash now haunted by the grooves of their own altar-ego The Organisation. Still, I enjoy this from the energetic 'Sonic Beatdown' to the COC-like 'When Worlds Collide' right down to that big hammering 'tallica riff in Resurrection Machine' at the end.

Enslaved - Heimdall 6.5/10
Grey cover, biege, unengaging music for the most part, this is a challenging one for me. The racy part of 'Congelia' is cool but really only 'Caravans To The Outer Worlds' would get anywhere near a live set or Best Of.. for me. Still a long way from jumping off this longship though.

Phantom - Tyrants Of Death 6/10
Second one from the Mexicans is all about that mid eighties Speed/Thrash attack and while they do capture the sound well it doesn't quite warrant its nearly 50 minutes rumnning time. Bigggest culprit is 'Nimbus' which sticks out like a dodgy classic Metal
band's demo amidst all the Slayer and Kreator worship. It's not bad at all though overall and I picked it up on vinyl, I mean, just look at that cover..

Tribunal - In Penitence and Ruin 7/10
Another new band into the collection and there is a lot to like about these Canadians take on Female Fronted Gothic Doom Metal with their second album here. Inevitably with the violin present the shadow of My Dying Bride is all over this and if those maudlin' mavens were indeed planning to pass on the torch soon they could do worse than look this way.

Wearing jeans and leather, not crackerjack clothes

Mefitis - "Offscourings". Perfect listening with a wee sup of red.

Ya, great album. New one is cool as well.
