Really like where the bass guitar sits in the mix on that track there.

Giving the new Deafheaven one a spin, "Lonely People With Power".

So far so class. I was a little skeptical going in but it really does offer some further exploration of the style they became famous (or infamous, as the case may be) for.

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son (pretty much had this one repeat).
System of a Down - Toxicity (always had a soft spot for their first two albums).
Doomsword - Let Battle Commence (perfect album to earn a few metal points back - Burn England to the ground! )

Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time

Starting off the morning with Maiden's undisputed best album.

That's not how you spell Seventh Son...

Oooh, looks like it is disputed!  ???

Used to be Seventh Son for me too, now I think there's three or four that rock equally.

Ah yeah, the debut and Number of the Bsyscht are right up there too.

Here's a genuine quote from Steve Harris on the topic:

"Somewhere in Time is our best album, mush. Anyone that says otherwise needs their bleeding ears checked. Seventh Son is the second best. Killers is in third place, and Powerslave is number 4. I'm undecided on number 5, but it's not Number of the Beast. That's overrated, pet. ARRY!"

Metallica - Garage Days EP
Considering it was done in a few days, it remains one of the best sounding things they did. Newsted sounds class on it. Mad to think what they did to him after this.

And Maiden's main problem over the past 25 years has been to listen to him, resulting in bloated, boring, intolerable crap. So let's not make the same mistake here,  up in the rarified air.

You're absolutely right. Here's a quote from an impartial source, Richard Dawkins:

"Somewhere in Time is Maiden's greatest achievement, the pinnacle of their illustrious career. Many of Maiden's albums contain filler tracks, but Somewhere in Time flows beautifully and flawlessly. Some consider Seventh Son to be their finest hour, but I would suggest that these people perhaps need to have their ears syringed."

Didn't know Dawkins was so into Maiden. Knew he was a Saxon fan alright, always prattling on about what he says is their best album, Selfish Jeans and Leather.

He's a huge Maiden fan. The band approached him to do a joint tour entitled Seventh Son of a Selfish Gene, but they fell out after Dawkins referred to Harris in an interview with Metal Hammer as a "control freak...a massive wanker."

I threw on Seventh Son there as I haven't heard it properly in years. Fucking hell, it's a phenomenal album.

My preference for Somewhere in Time is probably due to nostalgia. It was one of the first Maiden albums I bought on cassette many moons ago. I didn't hear Seventh Son until a few years later when I was getting more into heavier stuff, so it didn't have the same impact on me.

Brilliant stuff. I'll be giving it a few more spins today.

Powerslave then Seventh Son for me. Somewhere has a wee bit of filler (Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner) that keeps it from greatness, but also features their best song (Wasted Years).

Now Playing - Carcass - Heartwork, Surgical Steel, Necroticism. Probably one for the controversial opinions thread, but those are my top three Carcass albums in order.
