This whole set is golden.  Neurosis in St. Vitus:
https://youtu.be/rBYzLVRr9ZI

Would be more for a good full set than individual live songs.  Nothing beats a vicarious gig over a few tins.

No bother.  One of my favourites.  Couple other good ones by the same channel but that seems to have the best audio.

There's two that spring immediately to mind. Both of which are VHS quality

This because I can't think of any greater embodiment of the sheer youthful enthusiasm of being a death metal obsessed teenager

And his for so, so many reasons. Patton accidentally twatting someone and then comforting him like a child all while belting out an Alan Parson's Project cover is just one. Insane gig.

D.R.i. - Live at the Ritz

I bought this on VHS back in the day, was a huge D.R.I. fan. The energy is fucking unreal on it and plenty of violence as the punks and metallers weren't really in love with each other in 87.

Maiden Donington 1992 video. Great performance and more importantly a fantastic mixing job. For some reason the CD mix sounds really unbalanced but the video is perfect.

Yeah, people will bitch and moan about how it isn't eighties Maiden but the band was on their best live form in a decade here and it shows.

Also Heaven and Hell Radio City Music Hall vid, the Priest video from the Screaming For Vengeance tour, Flight 666 and En Vivo!, that Primordial DVD from Dublin 09, the Zep DVD (especially Albert Hall performance), PULSE by Pink Floyd..... all fantastic

Also I can't be bothered to link it but Google Rory Gallagher Montreux Shadow play 1979. IT'S FUCKING GODLIKE.

Also look up Deep Purple Child In Time Granada TV 1970. Best version of that song by far.

Jesus.

Maiden were on terrible form then and Bruce clearly couldn't be arsed. It was better than the A Real Live... recordings but is not a good live album.

I gather the sound is better on the video than the album, but the performances are lacklustre, no disguising that.
Title: Re: Favourite live videos
Post by: Cosmic_Equilibrium on July 29, 2019, 09:09:45 AM
Bruce certainly couldn't be arsed for much of the second leg of the FOTD tour but on the first leg he was fine. Musically the band were much tighter in the early 90s than they had been for a while, Janick really revitalised their stage performance IMO.

There's absolutely no way they were better here than the tours for Powerslave or Piece of Mind or Somewhere in Time or Seventh Son. That was a band at their creative height touring the world.

Donnington 92 was a band that had lost their drive with Smith already gone and Dickinson about to join him. I'd put nearly all their other live releases over it
Title: Re: Favourite live videos
Post by: Cosmic_Equilibrium on July 29, 2019, 10:42:16 AM
Sorry, but no. The Powerslave tour pretty much exhausted the band (they were, of course, fantastic live up to that point). They recovered their mojo to some degree, but Dickinson took a while longer. If you study any of the footage or bootlegs from the 1986/87 tour Dickinson is clearly singing at about 60-75% of his power for much of it.

The Seventh Son tour is better in some ways (I quite like Maiden England) but even then there are problems, the band don't sound as tight on some songs, and the Donington 1988 performance was an absolute shitshow - the band are pretty out of kilter and Dickinson is out of tune on everything and singing about an octave lower than he should do.

I will agree that the 1993 shows done after Dickinson had decided to leave are pretty lackluster. But not the 1992 performances. I remember the Helsinki one from that year is excellent judging by what's been released from it, probably the best version of FOTD ever (it turned up on Best Of The Beast).

I have had this discussion many times across various forums, put it simply I think that it's very plain Janick revitalised the band from an energy standpoint in terms of their live show, and comparing the 1992 shows to 1986 underlines this. I honestly think a lot of the people who criticise Maiden's live performances during the 1990-92 period simply haven't actually properly listened to them and have basically allowed the standard narrative of 'duuuuh, Smith good, Gers bad' to fog their perceptions. Not trying to have a go at anyone personally but I honestly think people just don't listen objectively to that era.

The only thing that I can think of which would put people off was the vocal style Dickinson adopted for NPFTD and FOTD which he carried over into the live arena. I personally love that style, it has a nice dark edge to it, but I can understand if it's not to everyone's taste.
Title: Re: Favourite live videos
Post by: Carnage on July 29, 2019, 10:49:32 AM
Janick brought pub rock to Maiden, and that's unforgiveable. He's a great player, can't deny that, but he's no Adrian Smith and as soon as Smith returned, he became dead weight.

Their '90s material is objectively their worst and those '90s live releases ( is there anything as cringeworthy as Raising Hell?) are seriously subpar. Donington and A Real... have their moments alright but are far from essential.

Donington '88 was fantastic.
Title: Re: Favourite live videos
Post by: Cosmic_Equilibrium on July 29, 2019, 10:55:00 AM
I'll agree to disagree on our opinions of the 90s era, but Donington 88 is dreadful... Bruce is just forcing everything and I really think it might be one of the worst Maiden performances ever. I think the occasion got to the band and they had a bit too much to imbibe pre-show.....
Title: Re: Favourite live videos
Post by: Cosmic_Equilibrium on July 29, 2019, 10:57:23 AM
And while I agree that Smith's writing was sorely missed from Maiden in the 90s, Gers adds a lot of stuff to the writing process himself, he uses lots of off-kilter approaches and adds an extra angle to much of Maiden's newer material. And he's just not dead weight, if he was then the band wouldn't have kept him around. He's great fun to watch live.

Ah here, Gers is a waste of space. If anything I find his writing to be from the Maiden textbook of song writing. What tracks has he added this unique angle to?

And on stage he looks like a complete spa, the rest of the band look cool and he's spazzing out on the flanks like a complete gimp.

Pity about Black Horizons at the very start being left out, though I think the fuck up leads to a fairly epic moment.

Can't be arsed digging through a few pages but the videos of Metallica playing in Moscow around 1991 are crazy.  A bit of basic Googling tells me that some of them were actually released as part of an AC/DC, the number of people attending was something daft in the high hundreds of thousands.

How have I slept on this band? It's mighty stuff. Just watching some more live stuff now so I'll be delving into their albums for sure. Also just realised they're playing at a festival I'm heading to in Portugal later in 2021. Fingers crossed it goes ahead now!

Nice one for the link/recommendation Tebs and Pentagrimes.

I see the Combat Tour video was already mentioned here, that's a brilliant one. Pity the Venom stuff isn't actually live but it's brilliant to see Slayer and Exodus captured in their prime.
This is one of my other favourites, Sodom just after "Persecution Mania" was released, this is the best quality footage of them before they became a lot more americanised and less black metal sounding from Agent Orange onwards. The energy in it is unreal, seen Sodom a bunch but this show looks like something else altogether.

This ones worth a watch too, from the year before with a lot more material from "Obsessed by Cruelty". Big step down in video quality but if there was any point I could pick to see the band at it'd be here

Faith No More are still one of those bucket list bands for me. When they were announced for Sunstroke festival last year I wasn't going to bother getting tickets. Now that has been postponed, and the fact I'm itching for some live music, I don't think I'll be missing out on any opportunity to see them next time around if there is one, festival or not.

Pure class:

I saw them on the Angel Dust tour - their peak IMO - and they were excellent, but have little interest in seeing them again for some reason. Their reunion album being shite probably has something to do with it, but even before that...

I wouldn't mind seeing them play stuff from Sol Invictus. I definitely don't think it's "shite", but moreso an album that ranges from from really good to bland. There's a live video they did for Radio 1 on YT where they played 3 tracks from it and they sound really good imo. Separation Anxiety is one of them, which I think is a great song.

It was Parsons indeed. I was at that gig myself got a great kick out of looking at JKB flailing around like a man possessed to the slowest possible music.

I think the S/T is certainly the best of the Jesu stuff and right up there with most of the Godflesh catalogue.

Some genius uploaded an unreleased pro shot Nine Inch Nails gig (would have been an official release but was shelved for being too clean) that had been in the vaults since about 1996 about a week ago and fuck is it brilliant. You just wouldn't see the likes of it nowadays even from themselves. I suppose I should throw a link but I'm typing so I'll edit it in. Would put many "heavier" bands to shame.

Absolute ancient bump, reminded by the Enslaved thread, here's a few good ones that are more recently uploaded:

Enslaved: Return to Yggdrasil (Live in Bergen)
https://youtu.be/S8juHgV0CWI
We had this knocking around a house on DVD for years but I couldn't find a good upload of it for a long time.  Great set, great sound, great performance.  Well worth a watch.

Kowloon Walled City: Container Ships 10th Anniversary
https://youtu.be/Ce0UqD4rYAM
Savage band, savage set.  They play a mix of songs from right across their catalog, sound is excellent, comes across way heavier live too.  It's only up a week but I must have watched it 5 times already.  Their performance here is top class.

KEN Mode: Live @ St. Vitus 2022
https://youtu.be/g5Y8-YAYz5I
Same crowd as above recording this show.  Set is mostly their new album, great to see it done live, filthy and sludgy hardcore, great again.

Nine Inch Nails: Self Destruct 1994
https://youtu.be/Xq8Hebx_Wp0
I think this is the one Astfgyl is talking about in the last post there.  Either way it is serious, a great version of them touring The Downward Spiral, very 90s video style with great sound, heavier versions of the songs, and a class setlist.

Godflesh: Live in Moscow
https://youtu.be/5g4ngMhdeFs
I think this is 2019 - anyway it is excellent, shot well, recorded well, does a great job of getting across how tremendously heavy they are live and it's a great broad setlist too.  Have watched this countless times, surprised to see I hadn't already posted it in here.

One of the bitterest disappointments in the 'bands I'd wished I'd seen' category. Saw Wovenhand here in Madrid years ago but there's no comparison. He's oddness went from a sort of country boy naïve charm to a sombrero and sunglasses and silk dressing gown goonish one.

The style certainly changed, but it seemed to be gradual. Saw them at Roadburn in 2011 and it was phenomenal, with a bizarre confrontational performance by DEE. Haven't actually heard the last album, but the more "metal" sound of the previous two didn't move me much. Actually thiught one had strong Primordial hints going through it.

He's back for Roadburn next year, under his own name, so we'll see what that brings.

Yes indeed. My first metal festival, what an experience seeing them annihilate the place.

These vids are going to be great to enjoy over the Xmas break.

I've been getting a lot of mileage out of this latter-era Morbid Angel vid, from around the time of 'Heretic'. Amazing sound, lots of different shots from different cameras, and an interesting setlist from an odd period in their history.

https://youtu.be/Lk_HLpznSVU

Also, against all the odds, I've been getting quite into older In Flames lately. Never thought I'd say that. But this video of them has a good sound, great setlist, and the crowd are so into they actually push the stage back into the wall.

Was at that Wacken as well. Never a fan of Monotheist and the downturned versions of the tracks off the first two were annoying but it was a great show. MA stole the show at that Wacken. One of the first shows with Vincent back.

Watched that MA set when it popped up a few months back. Great stuff. Saw them a few weeks before that in France so presumably the same set.

QOTSA live one from 2005:

https://youtu.be/VxX5Mj9Fc8A

Came across it in a roundabout way - watched 2010 on a whim before bed, when looking up some of the cast I found out that one (the female cosmonaut who wasn't Helen Mirren) was a Soviet defector who had a couple of acting roles but was primarily a musician. She (along with her husband Alain Johannes) formed Eleven with Jack Irons from Pearl Jam, and later went on to work with Chris Cornell and this lot.

Ah, the aul' Wikipedia rabbit hole (the video above was linked there).

Didn't she die? Alain Johannes was always a great fit. Wonder would he be part of TCV if they went again.

Have watched endless QoTSA sets from all eras. 2 new tracks they released sound good and there's a 3rd one in the Boston Calling live show.

https://youtu.be/Ce0UqD4rYAM?si=rO7AQymHjMMBzLqC

Honestly must have watched this through about 20 times, I put it on as often as some of their albums.  Feels exactly like a live gig the way it is done somehow.  Recommended.

Currently watching it warming up for the Limerick Paradise Lost show (no genre relation here but it always gets me going).

I saw them again a few years later at Hell's Pleasure, where he fucking read the lyrics off the floor again! Shite.

Happened across the GN'R "Use Your Illusion" live from Tokyo videos on YouTube. I had them on VHS back in the day - I used to think that the performances were 100% class. Perhaps age/wisdom has dulled that slightly for me.

Still has its moments but I just noticed that the second tape opens with a quick behind-the-scenes intro into "You Could Be Mine", then an 8 minute Matt Sorum drum solo, a 6 minute Slash guitar solo, followed by Slash doing another 5 minute guitar solo of the theme from "The Godfather" (which I used to think was unreal).

Twenty minutes there that my current self would take to go to the jacks, the bar and the merch stand.

this is gonna be of very little interest to most on here (hello, Quill brothers)  but I've been obsessed with this band called Burning for the last few months, who have very little recorded output but there's a few live sets of them playing (so far) unreleased material out there that are fucking incredible. This one is particularly ace. Industrial stuff that reminds me of a harsher Grotus or Crash Worship, the darkest Skinny Puppy stuff, maybe even a guitarless Skin Chamber - samples, two drummers, bass (the dude from Obsequaie/Majesties), vocals. Really eerie, paranoid stuff in places. Very much doing their own thing. I'd also say if you like The Body, "Cop" era Swans, Intensive Care, STRCLVR or stuff on The Flenser you'll dig them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1HJ88MNmAs&t=697s

Noisy, sloppy, often amateurish, daft as a brush, and fucking GLORIOUS in it's raw, unrefined heaviness and irreverence.

And you say what you like about them, but they had some fucking brilliant songs. There are a lot of more accomplished musicians and critically acclaimed acts that don't have any tunes as enduring and memorable as the best songs on those early Venom albums. And even the weaker ones are good craic.

And very few bands are as endearing or entertaining IMO. "Satan were a reet bad lad!"

Not my favourite but the Therapy? and Nirvana clips are great and there's probably plenty more in there to interest some of you here. It's 3 hours of video clips from gigs in the UK. It actually makes things look really sterile now by comparison tbh, even though that's likely the nostalgia talking as much as the reality

Edit: It's all time stamped on youtube by the way I didn't watch the whole 3 hours although any I've seen yet is a class little time capsule. Godflesh before Streetcleaner and Therapy? before Nurse. Also Nirvana playing Smells Like Teen Spirit before they got sick of it is a smashing performance

The woke New Yorkers have probably managed to cancel every band in existence at this stage, putting the place out of business :P

It's a grand little venue in fairness. Played there one time with Malthusian and it was alright. Nice size. My abiding memory shall be of watching Abbath, stripped to the waist with spandex and cowboy boots on, giving the drummer of Bömbers the deepest and most intense public massage while struggling to keep my eyes open with severe jetlag.

Seen this on Variety...

QuoteCity spokesperson Andrew Rudansky told Gothamist that the venue had been operating as an "illegal eating and drinking establishment" in a space that was only to be used "for a commercial store and for the storage of machinery."

Scorpions have some crackin live footage from across their career on their youtube channel, but this went up 4 weeks ago and I can't get enough of it.

The EPs are every bit as good but they fairly sound like shit so the album gets more spins from me. They are less korn sounding as well tbf. Some unmerciful live sound though that beats EPs and album

I think Chat Pile are great, and I fucking hate Korn, but yeah the Korn influences are there alright. That said, I'm eagerly awaiting Cool World. Only caught this yesterday, it's absolutely class and there are definite Korn elements there but I'm hearing more Helmet tbh.

That's a fuckin class song but I have to say it really does sound like something from the first Cold album with that melodic guitar sound and those vocals. I had to leave it off after a couple of listens not to ruin it for the album and I'm very much looking forward to that. Video is brilliant too

Great performance from the beginning of the month. I prefer the earlier versions of this song as this current version seems to incorporate a lot more of the organ into it then when I saw it live back in 2016. Doesn't really matter anyway as at this stage more chance of me winning the lotto than the full length album ever being released.
