Listening to the Outis cover of Jeg Faller made me want to listen to Burzum so I stuck on Filosofem (the one I listen to most) and it made me wonder if there have been any other bands who have effectively tapped into the same power source that Varg had access to in his most profound moments.  It's the type of thing that sounds simple but when done properly is incredibly moving.  I'm not looking for five thousand more obscure than thou raw black metal bands here,  but specifically good quality,  trancey/hypnotic stuff that takes the listener to another plane.  Hit me up.

Very hard to find bands that can put out an album with such beauty/depth like Filosofem.

when i read the words "trancey/hypnotic stuff " i did think of the whole atmospheric blackmetal scene, Lustre comes to mind  Simple trancey/hypnotic stuff very repetitive but hypnotic. nothing like Burzum but obviously the repetitiveness & song structure is influenced by burzum.
Elderwind from Russia is another and Basarabian Hills

if you dont like any of the uplifting links below best bet is throw on Filosofem again  ;)

Cheers man.  I'll check those links out later  :abbath:

No worries, they might not be to your liking there is  hundreds of bands lately  that have come out using the Lustre "formula" but i love his atmospheres especially when the primitive guitars/vocals kick in over the simple samples.

Not exactly like Burzum but from your description of simple/trancey/hypnotic black metal stormheit by branikald came to mind.

Andy's Marshalls, side project "Fuath" is worth a listen too!

Enjoying this.  The keyboards sound a bit like something from a Vodafone ad but I'm digging it all the same,  haha.

hahah agree on the keyboard/samples alright probably could do similar on one of those 80s kids Casio keyboards, but does the job haha

I was reading an article the other day and somewhere in the lines I read something like " when does someone know when a band is influenced by other bands and when it just straight ripped off another band? I mean nobody just creates music without listening to some first. Even sounds from nature.." etc etc

So how do you tell the difference? Do you have any examples (bands/songs) ?

I think that what matters more to me these days is that something sounds like it's played with passion rather than being highly original.  Usually bands will add their own little signature style and that's enough for me if the songs are interesting. That's not to say I don't get excited by hearing something new either,  but I love hearing bands that mean it.

That makes a lot of sense.

I've read before that nothing, absolutely nothing, hasn't been done or thought before, that everything is derivative.  I  wonder.

So here's a random set of 'metal' bands I found doing a search:
https://www.clickitticket.com/best-indie-metal-bands/

I haven't heard of most of them, but I can imagine they are quite derivative:

There is perhaps another way of viewing this.  Bands that push boundaries or are eclectic for eclectic's sake are one thing, but what makes their music more relevant than a band that is entrenched in an established style,  utterly focused and passionate about it,  and ends up creating music that is perhaps derivative or familiar,  but is made with absolute sincerity? I have heard good and bad examples of both types of bands and I think that the music that resonates the most is the music that sounds like it is emanating naturally,  from a place of wonder and dedication,  rather than being written to either tick the 'true' box or to contrive a sense of the exotic.

I get what you mean by "Played with passion", "derivative", and "sincere", but these could be completely subjective qualities though. They would all depend more on the listener's music references than on the band performance itself. You notice that when talking to someone about a band and they give absolute different comparisons to a band you know well. I Guess that a lot of the information you know about a band and its members also play an important role on how you listen to it...even if you often have to overlook a little stabbing now and then haha.

Now, listening to TANGERINE DREAM while typing this. How much of TD may Euronymous and Varg have shared along those years? It's no news Euronymous was an avid listener, that even was the album on his turntable when he was murdered. But if you listen closely, theres A LOT of TANGERINE DREAM melodies that sound like a pre-Burzum. Especially the Filosofem album.
