Dungeon Synth seems to have exploded in the last couple of years with endless amounts of bands popping up, and while I have been broadly sceptical of the movement, lately I find myself checking out random bands on YouTube while reading in bed.  Lots of it is interchangeable but one or two bands seem to be doing something a little more interesting. The Fungus Exodus CD has been hitting the spot  and Old Tower sound OK, if a bit more generic. Tonight's interesting find is Moth Tower. Some of it reminds me of Gae Bolg which is no bad thing.

There seem to be countless bands emerging lately.  Apart from Mortiis has this stuff always been bubbling away in the shadows and is just coming to light now or is it just hip and trendy at the minute?

Give me a few more tips on less generic sounding stuff.

Think it used to be known as wonky BM keyboard intros. Still partial to Rob Darkens old stuff, like on the Behemoth demo. Not strictly dungeon synth ( it has vocals)  but I love early Sopor Aeternus, particularly Todeswunch and the demos.

Not really arsed trawling through 29 pages of interchangeable bands as I find this stuff is generally fairly repetitive.  Two or three solid recommendations of bands who are doing something unique within the style is all I am interested in.

Vocals are certainly welcome. I'll give Sopor Aeternus a listen!

Wow,  listening to Dead Souls by Sopor Aeternus. It's deadly.  Really energetic gothy synths and great vocals that sound like a mix of Aaron Stainthorpe and Marilyn Manson. Great recommendation.

Yeah sopor aeternus are the only ones I can really hack in this type of music. It's generally dull and boring.

Give Moth Tower a listen.  It's surprisingly varied.

Glad ya liked it man, it's usually a bit of a marmite when I play it for people.

That Sopor Aeternus is oddly catchy, had it on in the background there. Definite Marilyn Manson vibe in the vocals.

where do you think he got his topic from?

Along with all the bands  he "discovers"

I have kept the fact that I read the NWN forum super quiet over the past decade.  I don't think anyone picked up on it (no seriously) so please don't blow my cover,  Mr. Anonymous!

Some chilled out ambient stuff, bit of a Burzum synth vibe

Had it on the other night.  Nice background stuff but probably not enough going to for me to return to it very often.  I think that's my issue with a lot of these bands- they stick a bit too closely to the rule book.  Does the job,  none the less.

Enjoyed this, there's a satisfying progression and build as the album goes on

As the promo for the album says, it definitely has that 70s John Carpenter horror film soundtrack vibe going on.
