Sounds like a discarded Grand Magus riff

These days it literally sounds like the lads meet up, have a few tins and whatever riff is the best out of any given session equals a seven minute song.
Shit my methods have been rumbled

It just sounds like a completely different band...  can't say I don't like the middle section on this song, but the tones and riffs and even the vocals sound nothing like the iconic soundscape they have.

Gave it a spin last night.  Not very exciting in any way and I feel the need to air a peeve here.  Those stupid fucking videos where the artwork of the album comes to life look so bad.  At least as bad as lyric videos.  Maybe worse...

They tipped the scale on the good albums versus bad along time ago .

Yep,  they're the Star Wars of metal, overwhelmingly shite but people keep giving the new stuff a go because the first couple were pretty good

There's a lot of metal bands you could say that about .

I get the negativity they receive after each album, from long time metal fans.   ive always been a huge fan since the early Black metal albums.
But it does seem no matter what they put out it will sell and get praise.

I always look forward to listening to a new album ,  i always lean more to Ted's songs, love his vocals. In saying that after a few listens  i can see it being treated like arctic thunder and a few of their last albums, i.e they get a few listens every few months.  Where as Panzerfaust & the BM Trilogy get regular spins.

This is the only Darkthrone thread I can see here so here we go.

I saw the other day that Peaceville (I think it is) are releasing a new edition of Goatlord, with new artwork that looks like total shit to me. What caught my attention was that it is the "original instrumental version". I didn't know much about this album other than that it was recorded after Soulside Journey but was subsequently shelved when the band decided to turn away from DM and go BM for Ablaze in the Northern Sky.

What I didn't know was that it was never properly recorded and was only a rehearsal take of the album and that Fenriz added vocals over it years later.

I have the CD, I picked it up off someone here a few years ago, but it ended up getting maybe a cursory listen before being put on the shelf and forgotten about. In my curiosity I decided to give it a spin and see what the negative fuss was about regarding the vocals and it sounds bloody excellent to me! I've been overlooking this little gem for years.

I find Soulside a bit sterile. I put it on from time to time and it's alright but I always end up going back to the early black metal releases, but this is another level. The raw production keeps the music nice and lively, but the real surprise is the insane vocals. The falsetto parts are nutty. What the hell was Fenriz thinking I wonder, and I'm glad they aren't on the trilogy of classic albums, but I fucking love them in this context. He sounds like he just got drunk and had some fun recording different vocal styles and the album is way more interesting than my cursory listen picked up on before.

Funny how some negative comments drew my attention to something that has been hiding on my shelf unnoticed.

Edit. The falsetto vocals, at least on track 5, sound like they were preformed by a woman. Is it the chick from Storm/ The 3rd and the Mortal?

Caarkthrone bai!

A mere 4 years it took me to come up with that.

FYI this instrumental version of Goatlord was previously released as part of the Frostland Tapes compilation, unless it's been remastered.

I'm fairly certain I read somewhere its Fenriz with pitched up vocals

Fair enough   It sounds great.

Some of the falsetto bits make me think of the fairy godmother on Wizard of Oz for some reason hehe.
